Yammer Adds a Flurry of New and Enhanced Features

Enhanced Profiles

We’ve redesigned profiles! They’re clean and uncluttered. Now you’ll be able to see coworkers’ essential details at a glance, along with links to the groups they’ve joined and the files, images, and links they’ve posted.

We’ve added profile photos for groups, so you’ll be able distinguish them visually. Every group message now includes the group’s photo along with the poster’s photo. We’ve refreshed group profiles, too. Group admins will find it even easier to manage their groups.

Following Suggestions and New Following Model

When we first launched Yammer, we broadcast public messages to the entire network by default. As networks grew, we found that our users were sometimes overwhelmed by the number of messages they received. Without changing the experience for existing users, we’ve made some changes to help new users find the content that matters most to them. New users will no longer see all public messages by default, but will instead be offered suggestions on who to follow and which groups to join. These suggestions will be based on Yammer invitations, reporting relationships, and which network users are most followed.

Though we aren’t changing things for existing users, we think the new system is a great way to make sure you see only the messages, files, and links that you care about and we encourage everyone to give it a try. We’ve added a link in the home page sidebar that makes it easy to switch. You can also update your settings right now!

One other small change: if you follow a user, you will no longer see the messages that user sends to all public groups. If you’d like to see messages sent a group, you’ll need to join that group. You can join or create new groups by visiting your company’s groups directory.

YammerFox

YammerFox is the new Firefox extension that lets you keep up with your network without leaving a browser tab open. When you install YammerFox, a small icon will appear in your browser’s status bar (in the bottom right-hand corner of the window) which will display the number of unread messages. You’ll receive an unobtrusive alert when a new message arrives, and you can click on the icon to see what’s going on in your network.

Desktop Application

The latest beta version of our wildly popular desktop application is packed with new features:

  • Invite users and complete your org chart.
  • Optional audio notifications for new messages.
  • Attach files and images to your messages. It’s as easy as dragging files into the new message or reply fields.
  • Click on attachments in other users’ messages to download them. Right click to open them without saving them to your hard drive.
  • Follow tags and join groups directly through the desktop application.
  • Directories and profiles for members, tags, and groups.

More Changes
  • We’ve cleaned up the navigation bar to reduce clutter.

  • We’ve added a small follow button to messages sent by users you aren’t following. If the mesage was sent to a group, you’ll also see the group’s photo superimposed on the message sender’s photo.
