The four-day TCEA Education Conference in Austin, Texas, kicks off February 1, 2016, and we’re happy to share some exciting news about the OneNote team’s partnership with Angela Maiers and students from Connally Schools at this exciting EdTech event.
Students from Connally Schools and their fearless Serious Video Games leader, David Conover, will lead a Liberating Genius educator training with Angela Maiers on February 3 at TCEA. Together we’ll empower educators to incorporate Genius Hour into their class with “Liberating Genius: the First 20 Days,” by Angela Maiers. This eBook, published on Docs.com, is free to all educators and offered exclusively in OneNote at Docs.com/Choose2Matter. You can join us LIVE at TCEA in one of our interactive sessions with Angela Maiers on liberating the teacher community on February 3.
Angela will host four sessions on Wednesday, February 3 in the TCEA Digital Square at:
- 9:15 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
- 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
- 1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.

Or come by and chat with Angela at TCEA in the Microsoft booth on Thursday, February 4 from 10 a.m. to noon.
What is Genius Hour?
Imagine a classroom where passion-driven genius work is not extracurricular, but is a part of the routine. Students would be invited to collaborate and support one another’s genius, experiment with ideas, discover new possibilities and make epic things happen. Genius Hour is more than a “program” where students do fun projects together. Genius Hour is a nearly unprecedented opportunity for teachers to guide students in how to be effective learners and citizens by helping them connect what they do in school to the broader community.
Angela Maiers helped launch Genius Hour in schools in 2010. Since then, tens of thousands of teachers around the world have set aside some time in the school day for students to work on “passion projects.” Liberating Genius in the Classroom is a day-by-day guide to the first 20 days of implementing the Genius Hour, guiding teachers through the essential habits and attitudes that students must develop to be active and informed citizens, and instructing them how to help students find and explore their passion.
What is Liberating Genius LIVE like?
Our first live event and live training partnership was with the Sammamish High School freshman students in Washington state. Check out our video below to get an idea of what this curriculum and movement means to Angela and our student community:
OneNote was chosen to launch “Liberating Genius: The First 20 Days” because it’s free and available on every device that matters to you. OneNote is perfect for organizing class curriculum, lesson plans, class notes, managing student work and collaborating with students. And new this week: “Liberating Genius: The First 20 Days” can now be copied over to either your personal OneNote account or your Office 365 school account from Docs.com/Choose2Matter.
Angela Maiers chose to host the OneNote eBook on Docs.com to build a Genius Hour community to encourage teachers to comment, share and upload their lesson plans and add to our Genius Hour Collections with the newly launched ability for any user to publish OneNote notebooks on Docs.com.
This means that teachers all over the world can share their custom lesson plans and their class notebook tips and tricks. This feature empowers our Choose2Matter community of teachers, but even more importantly, students, to share detailed research, notes and stories about their impact in their community with other students all over the world. Our partnership with Angela Maiers and the Liberating Genius Curriculum is a living set of guides. Our hope is that by collaborating and building each other’s work, students will come to understand how much they matter and share their unique genius with the world.
We encourage students and teachers to create Sways, upload OneNote notebooks and browse other student projects in our Choose2Matter Collections on Docs.com. Also, please do tweet links with your Docs.com Sways with @Choose2Matter, so we can be sure to add your work to the passion collections and the Choose2Matter foundation at Docs.com/Choose2Matter.
And be sure to browse the collection of Sways available under All collections:
Microsoft is also proud to be a sponsor at Choose2Matter LIVE events for the 2015–16 school year. Choose2Matter is creating a social innovation curriculum and intends to host eight to ten live events per year in venues throughout the world.
