Admins—get ready for Office 365 Planner preview!

The FAQs in the post have been updated to clarify which Office 365 plans are eligible for Planner when generally available.

We recently announced Office 365 Planner—a new experience in Office 365 that offers a simple, visual way to organize teamwork. Planner makes it easy for your team to create plans, organize and assign work, share files, chat about what everyone is working on and get updates on progress.

We’re happy to announce that today we’ve started rolling out Planner preview to Office 365 First Release customers. Office 365 administrators who have opted into First Release will receive an email with instructions on how to set up the preview once it is available for their tenancy. Once administrators take the necessary actions, users can start using Planner by launching it from the Office 365 app launcher.

Q. Which Office 365 plans are eligible for Planner preview?

A. Planner preview is available to First Release customers on the following plans: Office 365 Enterprise E1, Office 365 Enterprise E3, Office 365 Enterprise E4, Office 365 Enterprise E5, Office 365 Education, Office 365 Education E3, Office 365 Education E4, Office 365 Business Essentials and Office 365 Business Premium.

Q. When will Planner be available in my Office 365 tenant?

A. Beginning today, Planner preview will start rolling out to Office 365 First Release customers, and IT admins of applicable tenants will need to take a few steps to set up the preview. We expect the rollout of preview to First Release customers worldwide to be complete in the next several weeks. We expect to make Planner generally available to all eligible Office 365 commercial and education customers in 2016.

Q. Does Planner integrate with Office 365 Groups?

A. Office 365 Groups is a foundational service that allows individuals to easily create public or private groups. Each new plan created in Planner automatically creates a new Office 365 Group. Also, every pre-existing Office 365 Group will get an associated plan.

Q. Does Planner Preview apply to First Release for the Entire Organization and First Release for Select individuals?

A. Planner Preview currently applies to First Release Entire Organization only. We are evaluating support for organizations that are using First Release Select People.

Q. What are the steps involved in enabling Planner Preview for an Office 365 tenant?

Q. Which Office 365 plans are eligible for Planner when generally available?

A. Planner will be included in the Office 365 Enterprise E1–E5 subscription plans (including corresponding Government and Non-Profit), Office 365 Business Essentials and Premium plans, and Office 365 Education.

  3. I am really interested in this. I have Office 365 small Business subscription and was wondering how can get it.

    • Hello Steve,
      The Preview for Planner will not be available to Government tenants. However, when Planner is released for general availability you will be able to access it at that time. We still do not have a release date for general availability, but watch here for future announcements.

    • When Planner is release for general availability Government Tenants will have access at that time. We are looking at later in 2016 for general availability, I don’t have a specific data yet to share.

  4. Why would someone use this over Office 365 groups, or just creating a site on SharePoint? It seems like the only additional features are the boards (and tasks for Office 365 groups). When there’s so many options out there, it starts to get confusing for users to know where to put stuff. I don’t understand why there are so many options to basically do the same thing. If I’m missing something though, please let me know.

  5. You need to enable support for First Release Select People, we are a quite large organization. We need to evaluate this app before releasing or disabling this on our tenant.

    • We are evaluating whether or not we can make the preview available to just the First Release Select People. Currently it is available to the entire organization that signed up for First Release.

    • We are evaluating whether we can make the preview available to Select People that have signed up for First Release.

  6. When are you turning this on for Office 365 Nonprofit E3. We’re setup as early release.

    • We are looking into making the Preview for Planner available to nonprofit tenants, but we do not have a release date at this time. Please check back in the new year.

  7. I’m on First Release E3 in Australia – will the preview be rolling out to international tenants as well?

    • Id like to know this too. Would be great to test this in Australia.

  8. Will it support .ics subscribtion for mobile/iOS devices? Hope this function will be added to Planner so everyone in team can keep in update for the group calendar.

  9. This doesn’t appear to be available for our organization and I’m in the first release. Any update on when its going to get to us?

  10. I just made an E3 tenant First Release for Entire Org. I don’t see planner. Per above, you sent email to admins of such tenants a while back. How do I now, having just made my tenant that way, get those instructions?

  11. Is the Planner API ready and avilable ? We have a SharePoint Online App – iGlobe CRM Office 365, and I would very much like to see how we can integrate and use the planner with our App.

  12. Haven’t received the Admin email. We’re set up for early release. We have Non Profit E3.

  13. Do you know when this will be available for E3 non profit accounts. As a non profit organisation this could be really useful software for sharing/providing work to volunteers and by default helping more people. Currently we are looking at using a different system such as Producteev but as we have office 365 it would be great if there was a viable built in feature.
