Office for iPad now includes printing

Last month, we launched Office for iPad® with the robust capabilities and familiar look and feel of Microsoft Office, plus a fantastic touch experience built for iPad. Millions of people downloaded Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for iPad and thousands sent us feature requests. Today (only 33 days later) we’re releasing the first update which includes printing (your number 1 request), SmartGuides in PowerPoint, and several other improvements.

You can read Word documents, view Excel data, present with PowerPoint, and print your documents with the free iPad apps. With an eligible Office 365 subscription1 starting at $6.99 per month, you can edit and create documents on the iPad, use Office for your PC and Mac®, and get many other benefits.

Printing, SmartGuides and more

Your top request is here! You can now print Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations to an AirPrintTM printer. In Word for iPad, you can choose to print a document with or without markup. In Excel, print a selected range, a single worksheet or an entire spreadsheet. Of course, you can select the pages or slides you want to print.

SmartGuides in PowerPoint help you align pictures, shapes, and textboxes as you move them around on a slide. With very little effort, your presentations will look beautifully designed.

  1. This is a great addition. Now please add support for other cloud storage solutions such as, DropBox, Google Drive…This is the single biggest feature missing that is keeping enterprises on Office 365 from adopting and rolling out Office for iOS.

    • I would like Microsoft to add WebDAV support so that any cloud service that offers a WebDAV interface can integrate with Office. This put the requirement on cloud providers to support that standard and opens itself to all cloud providers, not just re ones mentioned.

  2. Would REALLY love to use the navigation pane in Word. Navigating long documents would be a breeze if I could swipe left to right and have the navigation pane open with nested headings, which I could then tap to go to, with the pane automatically closing. Bonus points for ability to see word count by each heading.

      I came up with a workaround for long documents using a table of contents.
      1. On your PC or Mac, add a table of contents at the beginning of the document.
      2. On your iPad, tap on the desired section in order to move to the section in the document.
      3. To go back to the beginning of the document, tap on the blue area at the top of the screen (above the ribbon).
      4. Finally, to update the table of contents on the iPad after adding new headings in the document, tap and hold the table of contents and select “Update Field”

      I agree. Great idea. I work in a law firm and our lawyers frequently work very long documents. Guy, your table of contents approach is good where there is one, but not as fast. And in many cases it’s not practical or possible to add one.

      Alternatively, how about the ability to jump to a specific page number (similar to Ctrl + G in Word 2010 on Windows)?

      By the way, congratulations to Microsoft on a fantastic App.


  3. That it took 33 days for Microsoft to implement printing is not surprising, because it takes Microsoft Marketing about that long to realize there is a problem when more than 12 million people complain about the same thing.

    Luckily, since the code was already written and, more importantly, since the code was already fully tested, the simple switch to turn it on in the iPad downloads was trivial from a technical standpoint.

    This is timely because Microsoft must be fully aware that anyone with an iPad purchased after September 2013 gets the equivalent Apple functionality (i.e., Pages, Numbers, & Keynote) for free. In addition, Microsoft has to drive off Google freeware, which also can read and freely print any Microsoft Office document. In addition, since Windows XP users are forced to protect themselves, it’s fair to note that Linux has had MS Office-compatible freeware for decades, all of which can easily print.

    Kudos to Microsoft Marketing for figuring this out, and realizing we have alternatives for printing MS Office documents.

  4. Make it available to Office 365 for Non-Profit customers.

      Office for iPad is available for customers who have Office 365 E3 for Non-Profit. I assume your organization has Office 365 E1 for Non-Profit. Let us know if that isn’t the case.

      • Correct we have E1, obviously because we receive it for free. As a non-profit, it was a great advantage to us and allows us to redirect critical funds to our programs. Being a nimble non-profit we have a lot of iPads in our environment and Office is the single most requested item with our users. Hopefully MS will continue to be generous to Non-profits and open this up to the E1 customers as it has offered other upgrades (Skydrive for Business and increased mailbox sizes) amongst others.

  5. Fantastic work! I can actually type my law essays out and seamlessly move between iPad and desktop. Office for iPad has been invaluable since the initial release.

    Some suggestions from an academic perspective:

    1. Improve how word count is displayed and make it persistent like in Pages for iPad. Essays have strict word count restrictions, so it makes sense to keep it displayed at all times (as an option).
    2. The ability to create a table of contents on the iPad.
    3. Ability to do proper reference management, mirroring what is possible on the desktop. This includes a historical and portable database of citations used so far.
    4. This one is a long-shot, and may not fit into the core usage of Word, but the option of sectioning text like what is possible in Scrivener. I can build the outline of my work, which is reflected in a navigation pane on the left. Each section has it’s own word count, and I can switch between sections by clicking on the navigation links. Most of this is possible already in the desktop version of Word through headings and navigation. I suppose all that is needed is to be able to word count based on section.

    • Just noticed that Kendo (above) asked for similar things, specifically navigation and word count per heading.

      This can be worked around by using separate documents for each section (Introduction = docx1, main body = docx2), and then use Onedrive to navigate between these “sections”. Of course, each document would have its own word count as well. Would still like to see a persistent word count displayed on the screen though.

  7. I do hope that printing from Office for iPad is not a premium feature restricted to Office 365 subscribers. If it is then it’s not worth downloading the apps at all. (What I mean is that without an active Office 365 subscription, Office for iPad is merely a viewer, allowing you to view and print files, but not edit or create them.)

      Printing is free for everyone. You can view and print documents without an Office 365 subscription.
      Note that you can also show presentations (including all animations, transitions, etc) with the free version of PowerPoint for iPad.

  8. This is a great new feature for Excel! Being able to quickly print from Excel after doing a quick analysis will help our business quite a bit.

  9. Reviewing documents and presentations is a common task for many of us.
    There should be the feature active of adding/ editing comments

    yesterday evening, I signed up for an Office365 account (I’d like to use Office on my iPad and home MAC). No problems until I tried to download the apps. I got a white screen in the App Store. Is live in Japan, and suspect that may be the problem. Is there any other way to get started?
