The New PowerPoint Web App

Last week we announced the release of the new Office Web Apps.  Today, we’re excited to talk a bit more in depth about the new things available in PowerPoint Web App. We’ve packed a ton of new features into this release all oriented around helping you be more productive. We wanted to make it super-easy to build great presentations quickly and effortlessly on the Web and with the new PowerPoint Web App you can.

New look and feel

We’ve overhauled the UI to feel fresh and up to date while reducing chrome and giving you more space to work. Reading mode has a nice, dark theme which gets out of the way and makes your content the hero, and higher fidelity slides ensures your hard work looks its best:



You asked for it and we heard you. With the new PowerPoint Web App you can insert, arrange, rotate and format all the shapes you’re used to. Even better – all this manipulation happens right in the browser in full fidelity without waiting! If you’re using a touch device we make it even easier to grab the corners so you can resize and rotate shapes with confidence.

To make formatting even easier we also added one of the most requested features – format painter:


Beautiful presentations

We want your presentations to look their best – no matter if they’re made on the Web or in the Rich Client. In the new PowerPoint Web App we’ve made it even easier to get the look you want with support for our new theme families – accessible from the Design tab on the ribbon:


To add some dynamic flare you can now add animations and transitions to your slides! We also made it super-easy to change the options and adjust the timing on existing animations or to apply a transition to all the slides in your deck:


Last but not least we’ve also added support for audio and video playback in both Reading mode and Slide Show. Even better – it uses HTML5 so plug-ins aren’t required! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a more detailed blog post on the new multimedia features of PowerPoint 2013.

Working together

One of the things that makes the Web great is the ability to easily work together with other people. With the new PowerPoint Web App you’re able to coauthor not only with other Web App users but also with people using the PowerPoint Rich Client! When your presentations are stored on SkyDrive you don’t need to worry about friends or coworkers having the right version – everyone can edit the file.

Another key component to working together is being able to comment. We’ve spent a lot of time overhauling how you comment in PowerPoint and are excited to bring you a great experience across the Rich Client and Web versions:


Sharing your ideas

In the first release of the PowerPoint Web App we gave you the ability to embed a presentation in your blog or web page. Unfortunately those presentations were just static pictures of your slides – how boring!

Now with the new version we’ve upgraded the embedding experience to make it better than ever. The new experience is fully interactive. All your content plays back right in the embedded object. That means all your animations, transitions – even audio and video! Better yet, any presentations you embedded using the old feature have automatically been upgraded to the new experience – no work from you required!

To embed a presentation simply click “Share” -> “Embed” from the file menu. We’ll pick four sizes that automatically fit the aspect ratio of your presentation and let you pick the one you like best:

    Thank you for this useful article.

    My firm is an Office 365 subscriber (E3 Plan) I have the following three questions.

    My firm conducts strategic planning and performance management consulting, along with a range of other services. Our Clients (companies external to my consulting firm that hire us for our consulting services and have domains and tech infrastructure that is separate from us) are large and smaller and across a range of industries. Our clients use Powerpoint 2003, 2007 and 2010, while my firm’s consultants use PowerPoint 2010. Client’s browsers also vary in how up to date they are, but most likely use Microsoft Internet Explorer post-7 while some may use Chrome.

    A. Needs/Use Case:
    1.PowerPoint collaboration in the form of my firm’s consultant managing the creation of ppt presentations by several of my firm’s consultants and members of the Client team, typically numbering 5-15.
    2.The most useful collaboration tool is simultaneous co-authoring, mainly of different slides, although it may also occur on the same slides
    3. Nature of documents produced is sensitive and requires a high level of security
    4.Client access needs to be easy and have a polished professional look, feel and navigation (e.g. Need for Client email to have them go through a multistep linking of their corporate email to a Hotmail login as was the case up to three weeks ago for providing external SharePoint editor access wont do.)
    5. Minimum client visibility of the collaboration tools, and minimum client learning

    Ability to edit and deliver/present presentations on a Windows Tablet or iPad is a nice to have, as is change tracking.

    B. Three Questions:

    1. In light of the variability of PowerPoint versions on the client side, and that collaboration requires the 2010 version, could clients who have local copies of Office 2003-2007 use only the PowerPoint Web App to address all of the above needs?
    2. Is this best done via my firm providing Clients links to documents on SharePoint, SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro? Does meeting any of these needs require that my firm or its Clients sign up for preview or newer versions of Office 365, SharePoint or Office?
    3. If the above needs cannot currently be met via Microsoft products, currently, then is there an expected date by which they may be?

    I would be glad to provide any clarification of my needs to allow for the clearest and most complete possible answer.

      Thanks for your question – the new PowerPoint Web App can certainly address the needs you mentioned, especially when coupled with the new SharePoint Online on Office 365.

      As Kirk Koenigsbauer explained in his Office Reaches RTM! post, we will begin rolling out new capabilities to Office 365 Enterprise customers in our next service update, starting in November and continuing through general availability. This means that unfortunately you can’t enjoy this new functionality as part of Office 365 yet. Your organization will soon be notified of your planned upgrade date and will then have the option to upgrade at the said date, or postpone the upgrade to a later date.
      Once you are upgraded to the new Office (which will include, as part of E3, the new SharePoint Online and new Office Web Apps), you can enjoy easy sharing with external partners from SharePoint, giving them editing permissions and allowing them to edit PowerPoint presentations in the browser. You and they can then co-author the presentation at the same time (you from the PowerPoint desktop application and they from the PowerPoint Web App), and also enjoy all the new capabilities I mentioned above.

      You asked about SharePoint vs. SkyDrive vs. SkyDrive Pro. This is a good opportunity to clarify that SkyDrive Pro is a functionality of SharePoint, and not a separate service. While SkyDrive is a consumer offering aimed to serve individuals and families, SharePoint and SkyDrive Pro offer you the business level reliability and security you need to easily and confidently share information with your partners and clients.

      You also asked whether Office 365 requires you to sign up for a newer version. Part of the beauty of Office 365 is that it’s a service, which means it’s always up to date. When the new Office becomes available on the service, all this new functionality will be made available to you – no need to sign up for anything else.
