Consequently, the new vsdx file format is readily dissectible without needing Visio. If you want pointers to suitable tools, please let me know.

If I understand your comment, I think what you're running into is the Visio distinction between "static glue" and "dynamic glue". The former may be what you want but it sounds like you may be encountering the latter. When you glue a connector to most shapes, including the BPMN shapes, it glues to the shape dynamically. As a result, when you move the shapes around Visio re-lays out the connector to avoid line crossings and simplify the drawing. This has many positive benefits but it does mean that lines don't remain attached where you put them. If you want a connector to remain glued to a fixed location on a shape you want to glue it to a connection point rather than to the shape itself. There's a description here: blogs.msdn.com/.../better-layout-using-dynamic-glue.aspx. In addition, if you do a web search for "Visio dynamic static glue" you'll find lots of other explanations. And at the risk of advertising, I included a very complete description in Chapter 2 in my Visio book.

This is great but why does Visio still have terrible path finding for connectors? It's atrocious and has been for years and years and years. What I mean by atrocious is that it refuses to use the path I take with my mouse as a guide. Instead it always chooses its own path and that is bad usability.
