Hi Michael,

I'm sorry that clicking on the Task Panes button on the View tab does not work for you. Do you see the Shapes selection toggling on and off as you select it on the drop down? This window can be undocked so it may be "hiding" wherever it was displayed last.

This would be a good question for the Visio Answers Forum since we can have more of a dialog there about the problem:
