To use external data with Excel Web App (or Excel Services) you need to use them in your own SharePoint environment.

Note however that workbooks that have external data connections in them will still load on SkyDrive, but will only display the cached values stored in the workbook.

My question is it possible to connect a spreadsheet hosted on skydrive to a local cube file also hosted on skydrive so that you would be able to interact with the cube thru the Excel Web App.

Once the products are publicly available we will have more marketing material available that will undoubtedly include this sort of break down.

@Robbpatt, the licensing for Office Web Apps is a bit complicated and still being worked out. Licenses to install the Office Web App on SharePoint are based on volume licenses of Office. SharePoint does not come with licenses for Office Web Apps. However, the best thing to do is discuss options with you Microsoft sales rep.

@Kenyon Brown, we provide documentation and technical support through various avenues such as http://office.com and http://technet.microsoft.com. You will find links to some of that information here: blogs.msdn.com/.../9971860.aspx.

Also, all Office Web Apps functionality will be available through SkyDrive including both storage and the ability to share with others.

As far as I can see if my client buys OEM or Retail box for Office 2010 then they can use the web apps on windows Live with no problem. However, if they have SBS2008 and upgrade to Sharepoint Foundation, they will not be able to install the Web Apps unless in VL status. How does this work? What happens to the user in that organization with the OEM version of office 2010?
