Office Web Apps Service Update Brings New Features to Excel, PowerPoint Web Apps

Back in early March, we announced Office Web Apps (on Windows Live SkyDrive and Hotmail) had become available in more than 190 countries! As more people are trying Web Apps and providing feedback on their experiences, we’re committed to making continuous improvements that help our customers be more productive across the PC, Mac, phone and Web browser.

You can expect regular updates on this blog whenever we have new features to share and today, we’re happy to introduce some fresh enhancements to the Web Apps:

More power in the Excel Web App

Excel gurus rejoice—you can now insert, delete or rename sheets in a workbook within the Excel Web Apps, and use familiar tools like AutoSum and formula assistance to crunch data more efficiently.  Formula assistance in particular is a great addition to the Excel Web App since it gives you online access to frequently-used Excel formulas.

More options in the PowerPoint Web App

You can now change the design theme of your PowerPoint presentation within the PowerPoint Web App.

Just click the Change Theme button at any time to choose from over 45 professionally designed themes (with new ones added regularly) to apply to your presentation.

Give these new features a try and let us know what you think—we’re all ears!

  • Is real time collaboration in the Word and PowerPoint web apps coming?  I've stopped using webapps for group projects because Google docs does it and I've never had it break unlike the Office web apps.

  • Good news.  Thanks for paying attention to the basics.

Not sure this is a scenario you are thinking about but I'm interested in inserting PowerPoint presentations in a WordPress blog.  And I'm sure small biz websites might like to do the same.  But to make it workable, Office Web App embedding needs a number of improvements.  Also, I'd like to Office Web App Reader for PDF/XPS files.  Hopefully these things are in the cards.

  • Is there a way to get custom functions (provided by third-party Add-ins) to work with Office Web Apps?

  • Please bring these updates to Sharepoint Office Web Apps as well!

  • Just what I missed in Excel Web App is now filled in, thanks Microsoft!

  • Why no updates for Word Web App? It lacks some neat features present even in Starter Edition (even WordPad can justify text, Word Web App can't). Give Word Web App some love too!

  • Nice to see that you now support pinning in Win7 though it would be nice if there were something on the jumplist (I'm not seeing anything).

  • No update to Word?  I really needs Print Layout.  I can't really use it with out that layout because it looks like I'm typing in WordPad from Windows 98, except that even had a ruler.

  • Thanks for the feedback.  We're reading it all, and it matters to us.

Ganesh: No, the Office Web Apps do not support functionality provided by third-party addins

  • Print/page layout for Word webapp please!!!

  • Well done, you guys make good progress. However I'm desperately waiting for custom themes in PowerPoint. I can't create a professional presentation with my own branded theme. Is this on the roadmap?

  • Welcome improvements, but something I'd like to see also (other than real time collaboration in the Word/PowerPoint apps) is a better rendering engine that, for example, would allow Excel graphics with art elements (shapes, text-boxes, images) to show properly.

Looking forward for the next update.

  • Interesting timing for these updates ;)

  • We desperately need a collaboration feature in Excel Web App, where I can see online on which cell currently my collaborator stands and is modifying.

Otherwise we get inconsistency when the same cell is being modified by two of us, and only the latter change is recorded.

This is the primary thing why we chose Google Apps so far.

Same goes to Word Web App actually. We need to see live which sentence (from period to period) is being edited now, and thus locked, by others.

  • What's the deal with the SharePoint version of Office Web Apps?  Will you ever update those, or are they dead already?
