Earlier this autumn, we shipped enhancements to Office Web Apps based on your feedback, delivering new features such as the ability to view ink in OneNote Web App, merge and autofit cells in Excel Web App, and print directly from the browser in Excel Web App. Today, the SkyDrive team is announcing some updates that are also based on your requests. Today’s SkyDrive updates will make it easier than ever to share and collaborate on Office documents using Office Web Apps on SkyDrive.
With today’s SkyDrive improvements, you can share individual files stored on SkyDrive, not just folders. Also, you can easily collaborate on Office documents through SkyDrive with anyone, even if you don’t know their Windows Live ID. You can even share directly with friends on Facebook and LinkedIn.
On the Office Web Apps team, we are committed to improving our products based on your feedback. Since we launched the Web Apps just over a year ago, we’ve been listening to you, and today we’re releasing new features based on what we’ve heard.
To everybody who has shared their opinion with us, we want to say a big THANK YOU!
Here’s what we’re delivering to you today, based on your requests:
The Office Web Apps continue to provide access to your documents anywhere in a variety of popular browsers.
Today, we are excited to introduce you to viewing and editing documents in the Office Web Apps on tablets using "Touch".
In this blog post, Program Manage Renu Devi, describes the "touch" experience; the design framework that guided development of making the Office Web Apps touchable and responsive to touch; and the technical details that made the editing and viewing tools available in touch-supported browsers.
The new Office Web Apps are now live across SkyDrive!
Since first available in 2010, Office Web Apps have ensured that the most common Office tools are always within reach. With just a browser, you can access your documents and communicate and work with anyone, from anywhere. And in this new release you'll see new editing and formatting controls, consistent co-authoring/collaboration support across the web apps and expanded device support, including touch-friendly editing from tablets.
If you've been using Office Web Apps for a while, you know that we continually make improvements to them, even since our big update last October. And now that you don't have to sign in, you can try out the 4 latest updates right here, right now.
Here is the recording from this week's free Office 15-Minute Webinar about using the Office Web Apps. You can join our webinars live at 9:15 am PDT. Click http://aka.ms/offweb for complete information.
With the new Office, we are making document viewing more touch-friendly in browsers on many popular smartphones. We prioritized such touch-enabled viewing so you can easily access and read Office documents on SkyDrive or Office 365 whether you're using a desktop, tablet, or smartphone browser.
