How to install the Outlook Social Connector (video)

The installation of Outlook Social Connector is different from most downloads. Besides downloading Outlook Social Connector (for Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003; it’s included in Outlook 2010), you must download provider files for each social network you want to connect to. Watch this short video to see how, and see the important links plus an overview of the Outlook Social Connector, below.

Note: To use Facebook in the Outlook Social Connector, you must allow a third party application (which is the default setting). If you have edited these settings in Facebook, you may need to edit them again. On your Facebook home page, click Account, and then click Application Settings

Written instructions are at Office.com for Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003.

For more help, ask questions at Microsoft Answers.

UPDATE: Read about the January, 2012 Outlook Social Connector update.

For Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003, you can download the Outlook Social Connector. Outlook 2010 users will be automatically prompted for an update to use these features. Then visit the provider files homepage at Office.com.

  • Following up on learning more about third-party apps on the OSC: this MSDN forum is recommended: Outlook for Developers <social.msdn.microsoft.com/.../threads>

  • LinkedIn does not work.  I have 2010 and it says i need to install OSC, it's already installed.

  • Aaron: Make sure you also download the LinkedIn provider file (you need that along with the OSC). <office.microsoft.com/.../outlook-social-connector-partner-listing-FX101812910.aspx>. If there is another problem, try social.answers.microsoft.com/.../threads

  • Profile Boxes are the third-party applications that are featured in boxes on your profile. To improve the user experience and promote consistency across the site, Facebook no longer supports profile Boxes from third-party applications.

How can I connect my social network if facebook no longer exceps third partys

  • Sandra: I talked to a few experts here. The changes at Facebook have implemented do not changed how to use and what you can get from Facebook with OSC. The Profile change is for third-party apps that appear on your Facebook page.

  • I downloaded the facebook connector but when entering my username and password states its invalid.

  • Alex Sands: Hmm, I haven't come across this before (except when I forgot my password on LinkedIn). I found a string of comments at Microsoft Answers that may help (or ask your question there). social.answers.microsoft.com/.../a838c7c8-7859-4726-8b18-4360381a8047

  • When "John Smith" sends me an email, I see his facebook profile, and the social connector works nicely. However, when John Smith sends me a message on Facebook, I don't see his profile on outlook - just the contact "Facebook" - is there no way to see John Smith as the contact, and not Facebook? Hope I'm clear...

  • Ingo: Interesting question. I'll see if I can find an answer. I get the same results. Perhaps because the "email" is from <notification+ocgl=pif@facebookmail.com> is the reason it happens. Perhaps Facebook doesn't attribute the email "from" a particular person so it can't be email back to them--you need to use Facebook to contact them. Just a thought I'll write here if I find out more.

  • I could not hear anything at all. This is very confusing. I forwarded the email with the voicemail on it to my laptop and I could hear it. I need to be able to hear messages from my work computer

  • Kim Combs: Are you saying you can't hear these videos on the blog? If that is the case, can you hear the video on this site?

  • i need help.... i tried installing the connector application but it tells me that i don't have the required update. even after 'updating' it doesn't still complete the installation. instead it gives another error message. Outllok 2010, win7

  • I've downloaded facebook successfully and installed it.  Works great.  However, I have not been able to get the linked In connector to work.  I've downloaded, installed it, but it doesn't show up in connector menu to configure it with user name and password.  I'm running windows 7 64 bit, and office 2010 enterpise edition.

  • KvK: I notice some delay from time to time, but if it continues, fire your question to the experts at Microsoft Answers: social.answers.microsoft.com/.../threads
