Outlook gets social: See how you can Facebook while reading your email

Today, the Outlook Social Connector lets you connect with Facebook and Windows Live, and it works for Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007, along with Outlook 2010. Cool beans. I gotta say that I have been using this and it's quite pleasurable--plus a time-saver. How do you use it? Let me show you in this quick video (complete with a warning) on the Outlook Social Connector.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

Learn more about the Connector and the links you need in the announcement and I have followed up this video with How to install the Outlook Social Connector.

  • Would be a nice feature. Tried to install it twice in my Outlook 2010 but, it kept crashing my Outlook 2010.

btw: My company likes to work as much as possible with Microsoft standard software. The newest Microsoft firewall blocks the video content on most Microsoft sites by default....(all you see is just a black block)

  • It's true what "florisz" said... The same thing happened happened with me. My outlook crashed like aaammm.... Then I had to delete the Social connector plugin from the main directory itself...

  • Cool! Is there a version for Windows Live Mail free? :-)

  • Have the crashing issues with 2010 been addressed?

  • It seems like you might be a little late to the game. Gist.com is already doing this, and I love using it. I don't want to incorporate another way to see my contact and my social media news.

  • Installed several time. 32 bit Windows 7 Outlook 2010. Doesn't show up in Outlook.

  • So did you guys just steal Xobni, or is this what Xobni has become?

  • HOW CAN I TAKE PICTURES AND POST THEM ON FACEBOOK

  • Seems there is an issue with interoperability with Outlook/Office 2010.  I think a warning would be appropriate so more do not try to load it and have a crash.  Crashes are not good for the system or people operating them.

  • Catching up after a holiday. If you are in having install problems go to Microsoft Answers for Outlook. Technicians monitor that tool: social.answers.microsoft.com/.../threads

Sebs - Download Windows Live Email here: explore.live.com/windows-live-mail

  • I tried twice to download it but both the time my outlook crashed

  • If you have Outlook 2010, there is no need to install it!  According to Microsoft:  "If you have Outlook 2010, this new version of Outlook Social Connector is being distributed through Microsoft Update, so there is nothing you need to do" so...chances are that you already have this feature.

  • Would love it if the social feature would recognize more than just "email 1". Most personal emails are stored as email2 or 3.

  • Hi,

How do you update the social connector once you've had it for awhile?  I know friends who've changed pictures and other things in their profiles since, and I'd like to update / sync again...not sure how to go about it.  Thank you.  bgallag at verizon net

  • Bridget: They should automatically update. I'll ask around to see if there something else. Perhaps there is an update you have not downloaded for the OSC. Check http://update.microsoft.com.
