Long documents don't have to be unruly messes. Tame them with the simplest of tools: Styles. I know, you think this is going to be a complicated up-do, take hours to sculpt, and more bobby pins and product than you ever thought were possible to apply on a single surface. You don't have to go wild with styles. A couple of headings, judiciously applied around your document and you can toss an automatic, updateable table of contents right into your new book or business plan.

 If you add more heading styles or change the text of a heading, just update the table of contents like this:

  • On the References tab, in the Table of Contents group, click Update Table.
