Connect your Inbox to Facebook and Windows Live with the Outlook Social Connector

Starting today,  you can plug Facebook and Windows Live right into Microsoft Outlook through the Outlook Social Connector. You can view your social network as you look through your email to stay connected with your friends, family, and colleagues. Here are the key links of what Outlook users can do starting today:

1. Outlook 2003 and 2007 users can download the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector from the Microsoft Download Center.

2. Outlook 2010 users can get the Outlook Social Connector update through Microsoft Update.

3. Get the Facebook provider download for the Outlook Social Connector from the Microsoft Download Center.

4. Get the Windows Live Messenger provider download for the Outlook Social Connector from the Microsoft Download Center.

5. Stay tuned to the Outlook team blog for updates: http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook.

6. See what other social networks are available through the Outlook Social Connector provider page.

7. Watch a short video on the changes made today to the Outlook Social Connector.

According to the Nielsen ratings, 67 percent of the global online population now goes online to visit social networks and blogs to stay connected, make decisions, and get things done. Today's news demonstrates our commitment to evolving Office to support the way you get things done. The Outlook Social Connector doesn't add another social network into the mix; rather it offers busy people the convenience of accessing them in Outlook.

LinkedIn and MySpace for the Outlook Social Connector became available in Outlook last winter, and today we added Facebook and Windows Live. Now you'll be able to view status updates and photos right next to an email. Also, you will be able to grow your social and professional network directly within Outlook by simply adding "Friends" to Facebook and Windows Live directly from the Outlook People Pane.

To give more Outlook users the ability to connect their Inbox with their social networks, we have also updated Outlook Social Connector to work with Outlook 2003 and 2007.

We've also released a new version of the Outlook Social Connector (v1.1). This update gives you the ability to receive real-time updates in the "People Pane" within Outlook.

We built the Outlook Social Connector with privacy and security in mind. The information people share is a personal choice, so it's up to you to determine what you share, and with whom.

Working closely with key partners including Facebook, our goal is to help you stay in touch with the people you care about, and simplify your daily routine.

If you haven't tried it yet, we encourage you to give the Outlook Social Connector a spin and share with us your thoughts and ideas.

    Thanks

  • Invalid username/password issue was fixed for me as well once I logged out of Live Messenger and then re-entered the FB login/pass in Outlook.

  • @Patrick I did what you had recommended and it worked as well for me. Thanks.

  • I have tested also with enabling - disabling live messenger - also with all variations of applications privacy settings in facebook - but authentication keeps on failing - do you have any fixes or news for this issue?

  • I also had the Facebook password issue. I removed the Microsoft Office Social Connector application from my Facebook profile per the tip from @Gastro, then went back to Outlook and the Facebook plug-in now accepts my password. If I go back to Facebook on that privacy screen again, the app is now there. Maybe it was an older connector? Who knows, but at least that worked.

  • In facebook, I don't see an app for Microsoft Social Connector... is there a way to manually add that?  A special URL maybe?

  • Thanks for letting us know about this and I hope to read more from you. Keep the posts coming!

  • I added the Facebook add-on to Outlook today, and it's fantastic! A couple comments though:

I think some people pointed out that Outlook doesn't connect accounts that use a different email account on Facebook. Adding a manual connect functionality to people you are friends with on Facebook would be great! This would simply be moving information you can already see as friends (their profile picture, etc.) into the same information you would see had they used their business/school email to email me with.

Also, this is somewhat unrelated to the Social Connector, but for adding a new contact, would it be possible to add a crop feature for the profile pic? I find often that when adding such a picture, I don't have a great solo or professional shot, but have a picture of that person in a larger picture. Having a built-in crop function (similar to Facebook's crop feature for the profile pic) would be really useful.

  • I use outlook 2010 with  live messenger  connector.yes it works ,but my friend's live account is different from their

working email,so the  live messenger  connector can not sync the live messenger status into outlook....any idea?

    Thanks.

  • Any news regarding the facebook authentication problem?

Any way to solve this issue?

  • Nice job ladies and gentlemen. Really nice.

  • I have downloaded Outlook connector  along with facebook and myspace... restarted my system and reopened outlook 2003  my contacts are not loaded for myspace nor facebook...and yes I have logged into them usinf outlook can any1 help solve this issue  thx

  • The only issue I have is that the LinkedIn connector only uses the primary e-mailadres of LinkedIn to match a profile.

  • I have tried a zillion times but get no prompt to add the Facebook for Social Connector.  When I try manually (View/people pane/account settings/ADD NETWORK) I get taken to the screen with Facebook app that I have already installed.  Should a Facebook option appear in the Social Network Accounts window?  All I see is "Sharepoint".  If I click on that, I get a prompt for a URL, username, and password.  Do I enter Facebook info in there?
