Thanks for your comment, Bonnie Jean. There actually is a setting that allows background saves; it's called AutoRecover. This feature is configurable, too, so you can determine how frequently you want Word 2010 to save the document you're working on. As for the "cancel save" dialog, that does sound frustrating. You might be experiencing a conflict between frequent manual saves and automatic saves. Do you have AutoRecover enabled already? Or perhaps it's a conflict with an add-in, have you installed any add-ins?

Document Save Speed in Office 2010 is ridiculous! There must be a setting that allows background saves and allows me to keep on working on the document. I have not dealt with having to wait for my document to save since the early 1980s! Furthermore what is with this Powerpoint "cancel save" feature, that appears to put my document saving command on hold until is counts slowly to 10 (or may 25) to give me time to change my mind about whether I really want to SAVE my document? To a person who chronically presses ctrl s to keep from losing changes this is exasperating!
