Blinded me with science: Introducing the Chemistry Add-in for Word

Want to build your own molecule image and add it to your research paper? Or how about add subscripts and superscripts to electrons and isotopes? Today, you can. Microsoft Research just released version 1.0 of their Chemistry Add-in for Word. Similar to the Mathematics Add-in for Word, when you install the Chemistry Add-in a new tab appears on the Word ribbon. From this tab you can insert and modify chemical information, such as labels and formulas. It even includes a 2D chemical editor. This is how you add structural diagrams to your document.

I don't know about you, but this release totally blinded me with science. What about you? Is this something that you'll use? Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

  • I'm downloading now. This is definitely something that, as a Chemistry teacher, I will use, if it works as well as I hope. Thank you for all your hard work!  :)

  • Thank you for the lovely comment, mom2bbjandag. After you evaluate the download, let me know what you like/dislike. I'm very interested in hearing more about how you might incorporate the Chemistry Add-in into your teaching plan.

    Keep in touch!

  • The new tab doesn't show up. Any ideas? I have Word 2007, do I need 2010?

  • Hi Takaia,

You do not need Office 2010 to run the Chem4Word Add-In. Both Office 2007 and Office 2010 are supported.

I checked the Chem4Word Issue Tracker site to see if anyone else had reported a similar issue with the tab not appearing on the Word ribbon. Here's the Chem4Word Issue Tracker site:

    chem4word.codeplex.com/.../advanced

Here are some instructions that I pulled from the site. If they don't work, I suggest you visit the Issue Tracker site and click Create a New Item. After submitting a new issue, someone from the Chem4Word support team can help you troubleshoot your specific issue.

Instructions for activating the add-in (copied from Issue Tracker discussion):

    1. To activate the Chemistry Add-in for Word, open Add-Ins task pane (File->Options->Add-Ins).

    2. Then select the Chemistry Add-in for Word and click the “Go” button to activate the Add-in.

    3. If the Add-In still not activated, uninstall (uninstallation process) the Add-in and reinstall it. Make sure you choose the setup.exe to install the Chemistry Add-In instead of Chem4Word.Setup.msi.

    Thanks for your comment.
