To get the automatic numbering, type only the name of the chapter (not the number or the word "Chapter"), and apply the same heading style that you're using for your other chapter titles (for example, Heading 1). The "Chapter" multilevel list formatting should automatically number the chapters in sequence. If you've already tried all that, it gets trickier--but you can check to make sure you're using the same heading style for all the chapter headings.

I hope that helps.

Sorry, I know this article is actually very old now, however, i hope you might be able to help!

I am trying to add a new chapter into my document. I have named in "2 - blah blah blah". If I go to the content page, i can update the table, which it does. However, i now have two chapter 2s.

Is there anyway that I can get the chapters to automatically number and update?

I have had a look online but am really struggling to find an answer.

Thanks in advance. Hannah

I know you posted this issue to the blog over a year ago, but I am having a similar problem now. Thereis something buggy in how the heading 1 is working with the footer page number. It seems that Word thinks my Chapter 1 heading 1 is Chapter 2, and thus reflecting the footer page number as 2-1 when it should be 1-1. Can you recall how you addressed issue?

Am having a similar problem like Susanne. I have checked the document for any hidden extra breaks but there is nothing. The headings are correctly numbered but the first pages (in all chapters) repeat the heading of the previous chapter but continue with the current chapter heading in page two. I've tried several formats to ged rid of the problem with no success. Why does the first page also do not display the current chapter number in the first page?

Each Chapter begins at the start of section. I am attempting to insert some smalller pictures and graphics into the document. To save space, I tried to insert 2 column sections into my mostly 1 column document. But I have found trouble with chapter page numbering in the section where I am inserting 2 column sections. Does MS-Word2010 only expect one section per chapter when using Chapter page numbering?

Thank you so much for the quick response! I followed your advice, but everything checks out as far as the number of section breaks, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

If the chapter title (Heading 1) for Chapter 1 is numbered correctly and if the page number (which I did by selecting "include chapter number") pulls from that, I'm confused why it is showing as 6-1. This is especially puzzling to me since the subsequent chapter pages are all correctly aligned with their chapter number.

Sign me as still puzzled, but grateful,

Susan

It sounds like some extra section breaks might be hidden in your document (especially if they're continuous section breaks, so that they don't start a new page, they might be hard to spot). If you go into the Advanced Find dialog box and click More, and then click Special, you can click Section Break and search through your document to find all of them.

Best wishes.

However, I have a very strange thing going on with my first chapter. The Heading1 is correctly numbered as Chapter 1, but the page numbers for that chapter are showing 6-1, 6-2, and so forth. I vaguely remember this happening to me before, but I cannot remember how, or if, I fixed it. It isn't like it is even picking up the numbering from the section it is in, because it is section 4. All the other chapters' page numbers are numbered correctly (e.g. Chapter 2, page 1 is number 2-1). Help! I need to get this document to the printer soon.
