I find all of Windows 7, including Word 2010, to be way more difficult to use than Windows XP. It 'intuits' things I had no intention of doing, such as automatically going to full screen when all I'm doing is trying to move a screen out of the way.

I think Microsoft just put out Windows 7 and Word 2010 to get people's money. And believe me, Windows 7 was NOT my idea!

I use Office home and student edition on a toshiba netbook. Also, trying to open a word 97-2003 document on a memory stick - nope! I have to open the program and the use the "open" command, find the document and then open it that way. 2010 as step forward?! DEFINITELY not so!

Hmm... That's a puzzler. Is it possible that paragrah marks or line breaks could have been added to your header and footer? Try turning on Show/Hide (Home tab, Paragraph group), and then click Header on the Insert tab and click Edit Header to see what's up there.

I hope that works.

Simplicity is always a plus--I remember a conversation decades ago regarding the fact that computers and computer software should be more like cars in the way that the turn signal lever is always in the same place. (But I'm in danger of digressing.)

With headers and footers, we used to tell people to double-click in the body of the document to close the header and footer area. That seemed simple--but we got many comments from customers who were having a hard time. Maybe it wasn't as simple as we thought it was. The big red button seemed like a good idea.

Have you tried the interactive guide for Word? It shows you the Word 2003 menus so that you can click what you're looking for, and then it shows you the location in Word 2010. You can find links to all the guides here: office.microsoft.com/.../learn-where-menu-and-toolbar-commands-are-in-office-2010-and-related-products-HA101794130.aspx.

However, I couldn't find the exact menu and command path that you mention in your comment. Let me know if this doesn't help.
