In an earlier post I explained that one of the main ways to change the order and formatting of page numbers in different sections is to break the link between the sections.
In this video I walk you through how to use 1, 2, 3 page numbering in the main part of a document and i, ii, iii page numbering in the appendices:

First, confirm that you have a page number field, and not just a typed "12." The most foolproof way is to press ALT+F9 and see whether the page number looks like {PAGE}. If it still displays as "12," you need to add a page number field. For more information, see the topics listed in the header and footer recap: blogs.office.com/.../header-and-footer-recap.aspx. Several cover using fields.

I am typing a book and want the page numbering (actual no. 1) to start about page 10. I put in a section break and it starts numbering there with number 1, but the first 10 pages are numbered 1 through 10. I don't want them numbered at all. Help! I noticed a similar post earlier and it said to unlink headers and footers. I'm not sure how to do this.

In your second section, double-click in the header or footer (wherever you have your page numbers). Click the Header & Footer Tools Design tab, and then click Link to Previous (in the Navigation group) to turn it off. If it isn't orange, it's off.
Two notes:
1. You have to unlink headers and footers separately.
2. Word might keep what you have in the first section (the numbers that you don't want) and remove the numbers in the second section, so you might have to remove the numbers from the first section and add them again to the second section.
Thanks this video is wonderful, made changing the pages very easy.

Glad to help.
I would like to have doucment page numbering in the footer (e.g. page 1 of 42) and section page numbering in the header (e.g. Section 3 page 1 of 10 in the header of the page that is numbered in the footer as Page 12 of 42).
I have seperated all my sections out and got everything in place - the only part that I can't make work is the page number in the section - there doesn't seem to be a field code for section page - this is usually achieved by using page numbering and formatting it to begin again in the section - but that then immediately affects the overall page numbering in the footer!)
I can't seem to use the autonum type fields in the header- that only generates error messages about not using these fields in a header.
Is there any simple solution out there?
I tried this in a short (two-section) document and got it to work by doing the following.
In the header: Use the SECTION field, the PAGE field, and the SECTIONPAGES field. At the beginning of the second section, right-click the PAGE field, click Format Page Numbers, and set the number to restart at 1. (If you're sections are linked, Word will automatically start page numering in subsequent sections at 1; If your sections are unlinked, you'll need set each one manually.)
In the footer: Use the PAGE and NUMPAGES field, and link the sections.
If someone has a cooler, better, faster way to do this (I've had only half a cup of coffee this morning), please let us know.
Really good, clear visual explanation Thanks a million.
Thank you so much!
The video helps immensely. I tried to figure it out using the text instructions but I was not getting anywhere. Thank you for the very helpful tutorial! :-)

Check to see whether your document is split into different sections. If it is, right-click the page number where it starts over at 1, and then click Format Page Numbers. In the dialog box, click Continue from previous section.
I have a large (50 page) document that keeps changing. I have reference to certain tables, Ex, See Summary Table on page 9. Then I add more text and the Summary Table gets moved to page 10. Then I need to go to everywhere I reference that table and change the page number. There are 12 tables in the document. Can I do something to "tag" the heading of the table, and make it udate the page number if it moves to another page. I hope I'm explained it clearly.

You want to use the PAGEREF field: office.microsoft.com/.../field-codes-pageref-field-HA102017459.aspx.
Note that after you've made changes to the document, you need to update the fields by pressing CTRL+A (to select everything) and then pressing F9.
How do I get my page numbers in my heading to pick up the different sections? I have Heading 1 for my sections but my page numbers start with 1-1, 1-2, 1-3... I want them to reflect what section I am in 2-1, 3-20, 6-2... Please help!
