When you're in the middle of a long document--a report, a white paper, or the next Great International Novel--where are you? It's easy to get lost.Heading styles can help you find your way all the way through your document. Word uses those heading styles to build a table of contents. And Word also displays those headings in the Navigation Pane, where you can quickly click anywhere in your document, or even restructure your document.Take a look in this video:

Disappointed by the post, I hoped to really understand how to manage huge text documents!
Hi Abdelkrim,
We're always looking for way to answer customer questions on the blog. Are there specific questions about managing long documents that you'd like to see answered?
Thanks for your insights, and your readership.

This is great - but what happens when Word loses a heading style and reverts all text to the default paragraph style for no reason? I've got a long document less than 500 KB long and I've had to reformat all my headings for the tenth time in 2 hours. Not good enough!

That sounds frustrating! I'll ask around, but in the meantime I recommend also checking on answers.microsoft.com.

I've asked around--and apparently a lot of things can remove styles. One possibility is a keyboard shortcut that you're typing not knowing that it's been assigned to clear styles. (The default keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Spacebar.) It could also be a macro that is assigned to run when you save the document.
Thanks for that. I could be mistyping. My fingers get a little dyslexic after a few hours of editing!
