Page margins revealed (video)

In this video, I'll show you a quick way to change page margins in Word 2010. I'll also demonstrate a little-known feature in Word for clearly revealing exactly where the text boundaries are in your document. No more ambiguity!

You can find more information about changing page margins at Office.com.

  • I would like to see this video. It currently only displays a black rectangle.

  • I'm sorry the video is not displaying for you. Do you have Silverlight installed?

  • this was actually very useful video. Thank you.

  • Thank you for your comment. I'm glad it was helpful.

  • My first page needs a 2 inch top margin but all subsequent pages just need 1 inch.  How do I set this up?

  • PackApps,

The best way to achieve a 2 inch top margin on your first page with all subsequent pages being just 1 inch that I'm aware of goes like this (in Word 2010 or 2007):

    1. On the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup dialog box launcher
    2. On the Layout tab, select the checkbox (so it's filled) for Different First Page and click OK
    3. Click inside the Header on the first page (so your cursor is in the Header)
    4. On Home tab, click the Paragraph dialog box launcher
    5. On the Indents and Spacing tab, under Spacing, adjust either the Before or After setting and click OK
    6. Repeat step 5 to taste :-)

If you have text in your Header on that first page, you'll want to adjust the Before setting if you want the Header just above your body text. If you want the Header up high, you'll want to adjust the After setting.

I'm guessing, though, that you're not wanting text on that first page. This should still work and you can adjust either setting, Before or After.

If you'd like to know more, Suzanne S. Barnhill, one of our Microsoft MVPs has an article that covers this:

  • The video keep pausing I can't understand what he is saying. Can someone explain why this is happening?

  • The keeps pausing. Is there asolution

  • ladybug, Samy,

We checked on our end and the video seems to be playing as it should. If the video is pausing, it may be a problem with your internet connection speed -- not fast enough. If that's not it, you might consider reinstalling Silverlight.

    Hope that helps.
