Header and footer recap

Page x of y pages exampleHeaders and footers--and page numbers--can get tricky. That's why we've spent some time with them on this blog. But if you come to one post, you might not realize that the answer you need is already in a different post.

I thought I'd list each of them here to help you find the information you want as quickly as possible:

Headers and footers and page numbers, oh my!
This post covers choosing what you want in your header or footer before you start--to avoid potential conflicts later.

Close the header or footer and get back to your document
People ask all the time. Here's a quick video.

Remove headers and footers, fast
This video includes steps for when your document has multiple sections, and whether those sections are not linked.

Add the filename to your header or footer
This video shows you how to insert the file name and path by using a field code.

Shortcuts for getting the filename and path into your document
This post offers some options.

Insert different page numbers in different sections
People want to use different numbering formats in different sections--for example, i, ii, iii in the front matter and 1, 2, 3, in the document body. This short video shows you how.

Insert page x of y page numbers in just one section
People want to insert page x of y pages page numbers. This post also covers different numbering formats in different sections of a document.

And you can find all of this information in Add or remove headers, footers, and page numbers.

  • I frequently lose my cursor off the edge of the screen. It would be immensely useful to be able to return it to screen centre by pressing a couple of keys. Over to Microsoft!

That's an intriguing idea. I checked into existing keyboard shortcuts, and I found that if you press CTRL+F, the Navigation pane or the Search dialog box (depending on which version you're running) will open with the cursur ready for you to type. But I have a feeling that what's getting lost is the mouse pointer. I'll pass this idea along.

  • You can set this up in Control Panel / Mouse / Pointer - check the option to show mouse when Ctrl is clicked.  Hope this is helpful.

  • Thanks for the tip, John!

  • I have a several documents in same file and the first one has a footer.  Then a new document starts without the footer.  Unfortunately, the last page of the document with the footer is not printing with the footer.  When I look at the footers, it does appear on that page.  But when I go to print preview or even just look at the page on the screen, the footer does not appear.  Any idea how to fix this?  Thanks.

That's a puzzler! Have you clicked Show/Hide (Home tab, Paragraph group)? That can make it easier to see what's going on. It's possible that you have a section break before the start of the second document, and so the last page is being included with it.

    Readers, any ideas?

    Best wishes.

  • In a saved MS Word 07 doc (saving as v 97-2003) (OS Win XP Prof v.2002) the "Page x of y" in the footer on the first page will only show "Page 1 of 1", but as soon as the footer is opened the correct number of pages are listed. If opened on a different computer, the same issue occurs. We have downloaded the most recent service pak. And 'Page x of y" fields are coded on the pages. Also, there are no sections to the document, just simple pagination.

I'm not sure, but I'm looking into this and I hope to have an answer soon.

  • can anyone assist with Page Numbers in Office 2010 Word being greyed out. Have tried removing Building Bricks to no avail.

  • Poor1 --

This question came up moments ago on another post. Are headers and footers also grayed out? Another good source for help is http://answers.microsoft.com.

  • No only the page numbering

  • Looked at your link - page numbering greyed out is not listed.   Google search shows that it is a problem and one solution is to delete Building Blocks.dot in Documents & Settings|User name\application data\ document building blocks\1033

  • which incidentally - did not work for me

  • Poor1 --

Did you upgrade from a Beta version? (That's the known issue that's been solved by deleting the building blocks file.)

  • your link in "add or remove etc" is not working
