If your document is just a little bit longer than one page, how can you shrink it to fit?
We've seen customer questions asking where this feature is in Word 2010.
Answer: It's in the command well. And you can pluck it from there and add it to the ribbon.
In an earlier post on customizing the ribbon, I showed you how to create custom tabs and groups. I created a custom tab called Writing and added a Print group to it. Now, I can add the Shrink One Page command to my Printing group. (For the all the details on creating custom groups and tabs, see Customize the ribbon.)
To start, click the File tab, click Options, and click Customize Ribbon.
In the Choose commands from list, click All Commands.
Scroll through that long list until you reach Shrink One Page, and then click it.
Under Customize the ribbon, click the custom group where you want to add the command. In my case, I'll click the plus sign next to my custom Writing tab and then I'll click my custom Printing group.
Click Add, and then click OK.
Now, the Shrink One Page command is on the ribbon.

Wouldn't it have been easier to leave it in the print preview area where it has been for the last ten years so that everyone could find the button they use every day without having to search through Microsoft's stupid help with it's stupid search function. You got us again, evil Bill!

I'll pass your sentiments along.

Thank you, Alistair
Hi, I have tried and tried this.....and cannot find the writing, then the printing tab under the Main Tabs! Any ideas?
I am with Colleen on this. I can't find under "Main Tabs" Writing......
Apologies: I can see "Creating the Writing Tab" is in your earlier post on Customizing the Ribbon.
Dave --
Glad you found it! I guess I should always include a link to that post when my Writing tab is showing.
Under Main tab, there is no WRITING option. I am trying to add Shrink to Fit to the ribbon.
Linda --
The WRITING tab is a custom tab that I explain in an earlier post that I link to above. For your convenience, here's the link again: blogs.office.com/.../make-it-yours-customizing-the-word-ribbon.aspx.
This actually worked! Thanks so much! I love this option.
Somehow I stumbled on to you. I signed up for the MS office blog just so I could get more of your REALLY first rate helps. And now, I don't know how to find older (archived?) stuff from you. I don't want to get a feed or "follow" you, I want to go backwards and keep catching up with you as I have time. So, how to I get to read your stuff? Please. (I was so GOOD on Word 97-03, and I am so helpless on Word 2010.)
I tried clicking on your name, and guess what, they want to offer me: your personal biography (which you chose to keep to yourself), or we could be pals and buddies (hey! do you like landscape paintings?), but as for your contributions to the Technology Wars, I can't find that. I don't know how I'll get your answer if you blog it -- do you have a junk Yahoo type account you can use to e-mail me at work [ dvaprin@imcpl.org ]DAVID
How stupid. Why not just include the Shrink to fit opton the tool bar, like it used to be?. This is confusing.
Whose the moron who decided therre had to be a request to put it back?
I'm sorry. I can't find the "Writing(Custom) tab in my "main tabs" as you state in these instructions. Mine starts with "Home". No "Writing" tab with the choices you state under it. Do I have to add this customization as well? This used to be easy. Why did they change it?

Yes, the customized tabs are tabs that you add yourself. I used the Writing tab as an example. For more information, see this post: blogs.office.com/.../make-it-yours-customizing-the-word-ribbon.aspx.
I agree with Alisair. I am a small business owner. My time is valuable. I have spent an hour trying to set this up so it will be easier next time and I still don't have the "shrink to fit" option. You'd think that you would have left the most used options as they are. That is only common sense.
I followed your instructions the best I could. It does not appear in my "ribbon" and the shrink to fit option is now missing from the list to pick from. So now I have to send a ridiculous document with a full page dedicated for ONE signature line to my customer. Thank you so much!
I'm sorry about the lost time. Everyone's time is valuable. I'll forward your comment to the product engineering team.
