Upgrading to Word 2010 from an early version of Word? Surprised by the default line spacing?
Word 2007 and Word 2010 have a different line spacing default than Word 2003 and earlier versions. Back in 2007, the product designers changed the default line spacing to improve document readability, according to a 2006 blog post by Stuart Stuple, one of the Microsoft Word program managers for Word 2007.
In addition to the default spacing change in Word 2007, Word 2010 introduces a paragraph spacing option that gives you even more control over your document style and appearance.
Say you want your document to look like Word 2003, so you click Change Styles in the Styles group and choose the Word 2003 style set.
But maybe the look is a bit too compressed for you.
Under Change Styles, you can fine tune by using the Paragraph Spacing option.
Rest your mouse on each option to view the options right in your document.
In this case, I used the Relaxed option to give my document a little more space but maintain the Word 2003 style set as the default for my other documents.

Why make line spacing difficult? I have never had any difficulty with it previously. Now, I cannot make the necessary change to a single space. I can't even the option that might allow me to that. This seems like it should have been preserved in the simplest possible way. But "NO", it had to be changed! I really am frustrated with it.
Hi Gail, I'm sorry you're having difficulty, and what i probably should have mentioned in this post is that you can single space your entire document pretty quickl, by selecting your text (CRTL+A). Then, on the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the Line and Paragraph Spacing button and choose 1.0 for single spacing.
Note that this method still leaves space between paragraphs.
To apply the 2003 style set (which single spaces the entire document including the space between paragraphs), follow the instructions in the topic Single-space the lines in a document.

I have the same problem as Gail. The paragraph line spacing after defaults to 10. Even if I change it back to 0 and select SET AS DEFAULT for all documents based on the normal template. When I close Word and reopen it, it defaults back to paragraph spacing after of 10 again? I know how to manually set the spacing back to 0 but surely I shouldnt have to do this each time I open and start a new word document?

That sounds really frustrating. I haven't been able to reproduce that issue (although I just closed Word and reopened it; I didn't turn off my computer), so I'm going to check around and ask some other folks.

You have made the SPACING topic far too obscure! I am a disabled a author and would have expected this topic to be easier to find. Why are so many Microsoft innovations made difficult?
this really is stupid. I don't want anything to do with this product - the most important things - like line spacing - are not easy - why mess with something that works?

Just a follow up to my comment of yesterday. I DID change the style and the paragraph spacing; I DID choose Word 2003 and I am (happily) back in business.

Two questions. 1) How set single space as the default in W2010? 2) How set page layout margin .5 as default?
As nearly as I can tell Microsoft makes it difficult to do both in W2010 and probably in setting other defaults.

Line spacing: On the Home tab, click Line Spacing, and then click Line Spacing Options. Set the options the way you want them (including the paragraph spacing), and then click Set As Default. When Word prompts you, click All documents based on the Normal.dotm template, and then click OK.
Margins: On the Page Layout tab, click Margins, and then click Custom Margins. Set the margins that you want for left, right, top, and bottom, and then click Set As Default. When Word prompts you, click Yes.

I am having the same problem as David Collins (8 Oct). Clicking "Set as default" and following all instructions as stated on 22 Nov makes no difference. Closing Word seems to wipe all customised default settings. I've been trying to find a solution to this problem since I first got Office 2010 with no success.
