(This post was first published in 2011 right after we released new SmartArt for Office 2010. It's the third in a series about SmartArt, which begins with 10 new SmartArt graphics. To read all of them, follow the links at the bottom of this post. This one was written by Adam Callens, Program Manager.)
We're always looking for ways to improve our products and provide content that meets your needs. So today I'd like to introduce you to two brand new SmartArt graphics for Office 2010 -- Hexagon Radial and Picture Frame.
Hexagon Radial is a new take on an old concept. Circular process diagrams are widely used, so we decided to create something familiar but with a different visual twist. The use of hexagons and trapezoids gives you a multi-step process with a central theme or title, but with a visual sharpness provided by the numerous corners and straight lines. We intentionally put a lighter color on the connecting trapezoid so that the focus remains on the text and not on the shapes themselves.
As we've seen the use of images in documents and presentations continue to rise, we wanted to provide a clean way to tie your text to your image without having to use traditional captions. The Picture Frame layout accomplishes this by using an offset frame or border that binds the text to the image. This may present a challenge for you if the frame overlaps important content in the image. If that happens, I recommend using the Crop tool on the Picture Tools tab. With the image selected in your SmartArt graphic, clicking the crop tool allows you to move and resize your image without moving or resizing the shape containing the image.
I hope you enjoy using the new SmartArt graphics as much as we enjoyed making them and, as always, we welcome your feedback!

The new SmartArt graphics look great but I could not see any of them in my german Office 2010. Any idea when they will be available outside the US?
@Klaus B, thanks for writing in. Try this, and write back and let me know if it doesn't work: Go to the Privacy Options in the Trust Center, and then selecting the Connect to Office.com for updated content when I’m connected to the Internet check box.
-Erik
@Eric Jensen: thanks for your answer. The option was already selected. I could see only six SmartArt graphics when I select the entry "Office.com" in the SmartArt dialog and none is one of the new graphics.
Thanks!
Klaus
Klaus B, many thanks for bringing this to our attention. We are investigating the issue, and will have more information for you, hopefully in the next few days. Stay tuned, and apologies for the inconvenience.
Eric, any news about using the new SmartArt graphics in german Office 2010?
Yes, please connect to whoever is doing the translation into German and tell them to hurry up to make a German version available. ;) Obviously the content downloaded from Office.com is language-sensitive (or reads the location of my computer) and does not show American content.
And while you are at it: There's an older SmartArt in the Office.com category, which has a non-valid character in the translated description and causes an error if you try to insert a SmartArt for the first time after starting PowerPoint. (There are already people complaining about it in the German Answers forum!)
Best,
Ute
Sorry, forgot to mention the name of the SmartArt causing problems: It's Picture Organization Chart.glox
@Klaus B and Ute-s, it’s taken a while for us to look into why the new SmartArt graphics aren’t yet appearing in German or other non-English languages yet, so thank you again for your patience. After researching the issue, we found that the new SmartArt graphics are “in the pipeline” to be localized into multiple languages, including German, and that they will be available by the end of the year on the localized sites. That sounds like a long time to us, and I’m sure it does to you, too, but you would not believe how many hands these have to pass through. So our apologies that it’s taken a while to answer your question, and that the resolution to it might be less than ideal for you.
When the new SmartArt graphics are released in German, I will leave a comment here to let you and others know, and my colleague Mary Sobczyk will write a blog post on the Office Blog to announce their availability. Because we’ll definitely want to get the word out. Again, thanks for alerting us to this issue and our apologies that we can’t get them to you a bit sooner.
so i'm building my site www.bellamysit.com/.../Home.aspx and i can't seem to get a hold of these sharepoint 2010 aspects. I've used smart art before obviously but i would love to incorporate these new smart art tools. when will they be available?
