Cool video and a great technique. Tal did an awesome post on this topic a while back: blogs.office.com/.../the-bad-the-good-and-the-icon.aspx where he even uses images of real-world objects as templates for building the vector graphics of your icon. Check that out for even more advanced icon-production techniques.
I'll have to experiment with Tal's icon-making tips. Thanks for pointing that out Chris!
