Outlook Best Practices: Tasks

Sorting through email—sometimes in that panicked or semi-panicked state—may seem the most logical way to figure out what you need to do RIGHT NOW. But I can tell you by experience that it isn't. If you have something that need to get done pronto and that you didn't schedule for a specific time in your calendar (and therefore isn't just waiting around to alert you with a pop-up reminder) one way to make sure you're aware of it is to turn an email into a task.

Renée explains to Harry how to do this, and also how he can work with tasks in other ways to make sure some prioritizing—and not freaking out—is going on.

Missed some of Harry's progress?

Some of the best practices require Outlook 2010 and a Microsoft Exchange Server account.

For all the details, see Best Practices for Outlook 2010. And, if you want to see all nine videos, visit the Office training course How Harry got organized.

  • Videos that don't play are a poor substitute for the advice from Crabby. Bring back Crabby (and get rid of these videos)!!!!!

  • Thanks for the mention, Aldousr (Mom? Is that you???) Why isn't this video playing? What happens? Can you gove me more specific info? Were you able to play the others?

  • Annik, we need some help on the WinPhone Connector issue.   Why is the Connector not going to be updated to handle TASK sync now that Mango will handle TASK sync on the Phone....this hobbles the Outlook Connector on the desktop sync.   We can sync Contacts, Calendar etc from our desktop Outlook to Hotmail Live but ....now the Outlook team says they wont fix the Connector to handle Tasks....why make us use 2 apps for this.   Most of us never use Hotmail except because we are forced to use it for sync.  We use a POP email and will never use or see Hotmail.   Just for sync.  But now since they have hobbled the Connector by not providing Task or To Do sync.

Help us here.  Or we will have to wait until a full USB sync is developed so we can leave this cloud kludge behind us and get back to USB sync.

  • about video, strange effect... if you don't push play button in 10 sec video disappears and you only see black square  :)   but after viewing all is OK

  • I don't want videos.  I want to be able to READ the blog.  Why can't you at least provide a text version as well as the video like MSNBC and other site often do.  I can read a whole lot faster than I can watch a video.  Many places I want to read it, the sound would be annoying for others.

If someone needs a video to understand the concepts they have serious problems.

  • Annik I assure you I am not your Mom but was a fan of your previous persona. I have also raised the issues of the videos on a number of Microsoft blogs, the fact is it is difficult to watch in an open plan office without drawing attention to yourself as there is no privacy, also often the videos wont run. Some seem to have been hosted on YouTube which is banned by the corporate firewall and others you click on and get just the black screen with the Microsoft logo in the bottom right but it not playing anything (although this may still be a firewall issue).

In case you need more info we are currently running Windows XP Professional and IE8 and have no control of the corporate computing environment.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Richard.

  • Dear,

After deleting my profile on Windows 7. My Outlook 2010 SP1 reminders do not work.

When I create a task, the reminder window is displayed when I snooze for 5 minutes the window opens again, it just no longer appears when I put 2 hours to snooze.

PS: occurred after creating a new profile in Windows 7 and What happens is that I can only put 2 hours to snooze and not 5 minutes.
