New Outlook Hotmail Connector released

We've got good news for those of you who read your Windows Live Hotmail accounts in Outlook. We have released an update to the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector. This update brings a number of fixes and is required to continue using Hotmail accounts in Outlook.

The version number for the updated Hotmail Connector is 14.0.5139.5001. To determine which version is installed on your computer, see the end of this article.

Here is an overview of changes in this update:

  • Several send/receive issues are fixed.
  • The Outlook junk email filter within Outlook is turned off for Hotmail accounts (this was erroneously flagging good mail as junk). Junk messages are now detected at the Hotmail mail server. Any entries you made in Outlook for the junk email filters (Safe Senders, Blocked Senders, and Safe Recipients) continue to work correctly and synchronize between Outlook and the Hotmail mail server.
  • Fixes for hangs and crashes experienced when sending meetings using the Hotmail Connector and when adding a new Hotmail account to an existing profile.
  • Fix for an issue where Windows Live contacts’ birthdays and anniversaries shifted by one day when synchronized with Outlook.
  • Fix for an issue that blocked synchronization of the Category property in an Outlook contact with Windows Live.

Outlook Hotmail Connector and HTTPS Support

The Outlook Hotmail Connector doesn’t support the HTTPS protocol. We are actively working on the issue with our colleagues in Windows Live.

  • One last thing. When notified by Outlook that I need to update Hotmail Connector, it gives me the ability to update and yet it still installs the wrong version. Microsoft should have all of this handled before Outlook notifies me that I need to update. It will probably reduce the number of calls for support. I'm sorry, I just realized that Microsoft manufactures $$$ through support calls for problems they have created. Call me cynical. I just call them the way I see them.

    Question

    Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector

Applies To: Windows | Windows Vista | Programs

I have tried to download the newest version of Microsoft Outlook Hotmail connector.  After doing so, I am unable to expand my email file folder and access my emails, etc.  I get the error: The set of folders cannot be opened. An unexpected error has occurred. MHPI was unable to load the information service msncon.dll.   I am using Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium/Office 2007and believe my latest update of Outlook Connector is 32-bit (14.0.5117.5000).  I tried manually downloading the version from the MSN website only to obtain the same results.  What next?

  • Jame: The latest version of Hotmail Connector is 14.0.5139.5001. I have found several Microsoft Hotmail Connector download pages but none of them have the latest version. One of them advertises the wrong version number and when you download you get a different version but won't know that until you pass your cursor over the file after downloading. The other Microsoft pages don't tell you the actual version you are downloading. All they tell you (further down the page) is that you are downloading version 14.1 or version 14.2. For me, the actual downloaded version is 14.0.5136.5000. I really don't appreciate the way Microsoft does business but remember the golden rule: "He who has the gold, makes the rules".

  • bbales57 and Jame,

Please do the following steps to install the updated connector.

    1.Close Outlook.

2.Go to Control Panel >> Programs and Features and uninstall “Microsoft Office Outlook Connector”

3.Install the updated version from the appropriate link below:

For Outlook 2010, Office Outlook 2007, or Office Outlook 2003 32-bit:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

    For Outlook 2010 64-bit:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

Also, to help explain the version numbers.

Outlook Connector 14.1 is version 14.0.5118.5000

Outlook Connector 14.2 is version 14.0.5139.5001

  • Hello everyone,

Thanks for the feedback. I understand there has been some confusion when downloading the new Connector. Please note that the version of the file you download will appear to be 14.0.5136.5000 when you hover, or look at the file's properties. This is the correct version of the installer which will install version 14.0.5139.5001 of the Connector. Please proceed with installing this file and it should resolve your issues.

If you are having trouble with the installation, or have seen other error messages, please report them at http://answers.microsoft.com. We have support staff who can help you and gather more information at the Answers site.

  • Gabriel; Thanks for your concern, however the page you sent me to is one that I already found. The page says that the version in 14.0.5139.1000 but you actually download version 14.0.5136.5000. After installing it Outlook still tells you to upgrade to a newer version. From what I understand the latest version is 14.0.5139.5001.

  • Vaio SR590, Win7 64bit, Office 2010 32bit (because of EndNote).

Yesterday, through Windows Update, I received a message regarding the new version of the hotmail connector.

I proceeded to update it but since then I was not able to receive/send more messages through my Outlook. Today I tried again, first by means of "repair" and then, when that one fail, by means of uninstalling and reinstalling the connector as well as re-booting the laptop. When I look at the version installed, it corresponds to the last one, but I am still unable to make my Outlook check my hotmail account. By reading other posts, I cannot avoid thinking that there is a conflict or a problem with that connector. I am a 100% legal owner of MS programs, so, any solutions?

  • Josh; Your instructions solved my problem.

"Microsoft' is any easy target to blame for all of the problems. However, Microsoft is a company of individuals and it takes individuals like to you to step up and solve the problems "Microsoft" would never get to.

    Thank you.

  • Gabriel - Thanks, your suggestion worked and I am able to access my emails again!  I appreciate your help! :)

  • Excellent! Thank you for sharing these valuable experience with us. What you have displayed really helped us a lot!

  • I know I  have downloaded the latest Outlook Hotmail connector, having used the previous one since 2007 without any problems, and get the message MAPI was unable to load the information service msncon.dll Now I can't use Outlook or Business Contact Manager. Looks like I a, not the only one.

  • Have done the force upgrade process as well as doing it manually and still having the loop.

I can see a problem with the versions, in the Control Panel / Programs and Features, the installed version is: (14.0.5139.1000)

while in the "About Outlook Hotmail Connector" the version is Connector 32-bit (14.0.5117.5000)

Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

    Regards

  • pseptien, It sounds like you may have more than one Office installation. Please try installing both the 32-bit and 64-bit options linked above. If after running both installers you are still seeing a problem, I recommend posting your issue in the forums at http://answers.microsoft.com. Thanks!

    Josh Meisels, Outlook Program Manager

  • Seriously?  Outlook Connector cannot install because Outlook Connector Installer is using files Outlook Connector Installer needs to update?
