New Outlook Hotmail Connector released

We've got good news for those of you who read your Windows Live Hotmail accounts in Outlook. We have released an update to the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector. This update brings a number of fixes and is required to continue using Hotmail accounts in Outlook.

The version number for the updated Hotmail Connector is 14.0.5139.5001. To determine which version is installed on your computer, see the end of this article.

Here is an overview of changes in this update:

  • Several send/receive issues are fixed.
  • The Outlook junk email filter within Outlook is turned off for Hotmail accounts (this was erroneously flagging good mail as junk). Junk messages are now detected at the Hotmail mail server. Any entries you made in Outlook for the junk email filters (Safe Senders, Blocked Senders, and Safe Recipients) continue to work correctly and synchronize between Outlook and the Hotmail mail server.
  • Fixes for hangs and crashes experienced when sending meetings using the Hotmail Connector and when adding a new Hotmail account to an existing profile.
  • Fix for an issue where Windows Live contacts’ birthdays and anniversaries shifted by one day when synchronized with Outlook.
  • Fix for an issue that blocked synchronization of the Category property in an Outlook contact with Windows Live.

Outlook Hotmail Connector and HTTPS Support

The Outlook Hotmail Connector doesn’t support the HTTPS protocol. We are actively working on the issue with our colleagues in Windows Live.

Upgrading

Similar to previous releases, when Outlook (with the Hotmail Connector installed) is started, a prompt appears to upgrade to the latest release.

Outlook Connector installation dialog box

To manually install the Outlook Hotmail Connector, do the following:

  1. Go to the Microsoft Download Center using the applicable link for your computer.

For Outlook 2010, Office Outlook 2007, or Office Outlook 2003 32-bit:

    Outlook Hotmail Connector 14.2 for Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010 32-bit

    For Outlook 2010 64-bit:

Outlook Hotmail Connector 14.2 for Outlook 2010 64-bit

  2. Download the setup file by clicking Download next to OutlookConnector.exe, and then save the file to your computer.
  3. Double-click the downloaded file.
  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.

How to verify what version you are running

  • I have just been "offerred" the opportunity to upgrade to the new Outlook Connector.  Unfortunately, the Outlook Connector Extension (MSNCON32.DLL) will not open now.  Please advise.

  • Additional information for my previous entry.  I am running Vista 64-bit and Outlook 2007.  All software is current as of today with MSN automatic updates.

  • DaveE, Please try the manual install steps listed in the blog post to download and install the connector. If you are still having trouble please try posting your issue at http://answers.microsoft.com to get more help with this issue.

  • The automatic update for the Outlook Hotmail Connector to .5001 did not work on my Office 2010 32bit running on Win7 32bit.  The installation file downloads, installs and then provides clickable options for a repair or remove only. By manually downloading the update from the above link and manually installing it, I was then able to successfully install the update.

    Also, your documented steps for verifying the version of the connector is missing a step;

    1. Start Outlook

    2. Click the File tab

-> 3. Choose your Hotmail account from the Account Information button <- extra step

    4. Click the Additional Information button

    (continues as per your steps)

  • Huh... weird. I'm usnig IE9 and although everything displayed correctly, I had to switch to compatibility mode to successfully post my previous comment.

  • GTRoberts, I'm glad the manual update instructions worked for you. The step you mentioned is only required if you have multiple accounts and you do not have your Hotmail account selected when you click File. I will update the blog post to reflect this - thanks for bringing it to our attention!

As for the IE9 issue, I am using IE9 to comment right now. Are you using an earlier version such as the IE9 Beta?

  • msncon32.dll is missing.

I have DaveE's trouble. My windows is XP 32bits. I performed both: automatic installation and then manual installation after desinstalling the latest version. However, Outlook works (receives and sends messages). XP and Office 2007 are uptodate

    Can we install msncon32.dll manually?

    Thanks

  • Not sure I understand your version numbers.

"Note: This latest update (14.0.5139.1000)"- and then you offer a download of  "14.2"

  • Is Windows Live 2011 version of Connector updated too?

or If user install Windows Live 2011, they need update Outlook Connector 14.2 after windows live 2011 setup process?

I just install Windows Live 2011 yesterday & I got update now prompt cycle,

    so I remove/reinstall connector manually.

  • I have outlook 2007 and win 7 and I was offered to upgrade today.  I f I did not upgrade I couldn't access my hotmail account.  So I upgraded and I still can not access my account.  I keep trying to reload by I consistently get this message.  The set of folders cannot be opened.  An unexpected error has occurred.  MPI was unable to load the information service msncon.dll. Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured.

  • I am running Office 2003 on Vista, the auto upgrade doesn't work - when Outlook restarts, there is no Outlook Connector menu. The same occurs if I uninstall Connector and manually install version 14.2.

  • I have Vista 64-bit; MS Office 2003.  This upgrade not working for me either.  Hotmail file won't open within Outlook.  Note: the versions that are downloaded (either from here or the "home" Connector website, are not the same as advertised above (per my last try about 10 hours ago).  What is downloaded is an earlier version.

Urgent help required since Outlook no longer working as I'd like.

  • Your download link on the download page has version 14.0.5136.5000 which is not updating the Hotmail Connector. You need to have someone direct the download link to version 14.0.5139.5001 otherwise Hotmail Connector doesn't get updated and it keeps throwing the "Update" message in your face.

  • For those who have troubles with msncon32.dll.

I just got an answer from Brian Tillman (MVP Outlook) community moderator.

    Here is: "Try deleting extend.dat in %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook"

    It worked for me.

  • The download page also says that you are downloading version 14.0.5139.1000 when you are actually downloading version 14.0.5136.5000. Somebody needs to remedy all this and notify us when we can download version 14.0.5139.5001. Thank you.
