Outlook Gets Social with LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace

Update:

We have heard that some Microsoft Outlook 2010 Beta users are experiencing crashes when trying to use the new Outlook Social Connector (OSC) Beta (February Update) that was released today along with the LinkedIn Provider for Outlook.

The OSC that was included with the Outlook 2010 Beta must be uninstalled before installing the new OSC Beta (February Update). After the February OSC update is installed, the LinkedIn Provider for Outlook can then be installed.

This information is included on our Download Center page for the OSC Beta (February Update).

If you have installed the OSC Beta (February Update) and Outlook is crashing, follow the steps outlined on this page. As a reminder, only 32-bit Outlook is supported right now.  64-bit support for the OSC will be available soon.

In November 2009, we announced both the beta of Microsoft Office 2010 as well as the Outlook Social Connector. The Outlook Social Connector brings together communications history, contact information, and professional and social networking information into the Outlook experience.

We are continuing to deliver on that vision today with two new announcements. First, we’re proud to announce the public beta of LinkedIn for Outlook, which will enable our millions of Office 2010 Beta users to connect the OSC to a public network for the first time. Second, we're excited to announce partnerships with Facebook — the most popular social Web site in the world, and MySpace — a leading social platform connecting people through expression, content, and culture.

LinkedIn for Outlook brings together the most popular professional network with the world’s leading professional Inbox. Here are some of the things you can do today by downloading the beta:

  • Connect to your LinkedIn account to view your colleagues’ status updates and photos next to an e-mail message they sent you.
  • Your colleagues’ latest contact information from LinkedIn automatically updates his or her Outlook contact. Whenever someone changes a phone number, e-mail address, or other contact details, it’s automatically updated in Outlook — you are always up to date.
  • Synchronize your mobile phone with Outlook to stay up-to-date — you don’t have to worry about keeping track of new phone numbers and contact info — contacts’ information from the Web is synchronized to your mobile phone.
  • Grow your professional network directly from within your Inbox — add colleagues with one click.

We are proud to continue partnering with LinkedIn and we want to congratulate them on a job well done. With this beta, our customers are able to stay connected to their network without leaving the Outlook Inbox.

Our vision for Outlook (and the OSC) is to provide a communications hub that is vital to both professional and personal communications; by integrating with both Facebook and MySpace, Outlook 2010 enables you to connect not only to co-workers and colleagues, but with all of your friends and family within your Outlook Inbox.

Facebook for OutlookFacebook for Outlook

You can view friends’ activities, photos, and status updates within Outlook — as well as grow your network by adding friends from the same view. Both Facebook for Outlook and MySpace for Outlook will be available later this year as our official release of Office 2010 approaches.

Finally, its important to mention that with multiple professional and social networks available for the Outlook Social Connector, the design of the OSC is such that your privacy and permissions settings on each of the networks you use are represented and respected within this experience. For example, if your profile photo and job title are publicly listed on a given network, then OSC users will see your photo and job title when receiving an e-mail from you (if they use that same network). Similarly, if you choose to restrict profile access on a given network, the OSC will respect that privacy. The goal of the OSC is not to create another social network or set of privacy settings for you to manage, but rather to bring the networks you already value and use to the Outlook experience.

To recap, here is what you can do today to get started with the Outlook Social Connector.

  1. Download the Office 2010 Beta at www.Office.com/beta
  2. Update to the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector using the instructions on the Microsoft Download Center.
  3. Get the LinkedIn download for the Outlook Social Connector at www.LinkedIn.com/outlook.
  4. Keep watching the Outlook team blog for availability of the Facebook and MySpace download for the Outlook Social Connector at http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/.

Note To use LinkedIn for Outlook requires the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector, which supports the 32-bit English version of the official Microsoft Office 2010 Beta. The beta of the Outlook Social Connector is provided as-is, is subject to change without notice, and does not include formal product support from Microsoft.

We are thrilled to reach this significant milestone with LinkedIn and to welcome both Facebook and MySpace to the Outlook Social Connector ecosystem. Stay tuned to this blog for more information from the Outlook team as we get closer to the launch of Office 2010!

  • Linking with linkedin works fine, however there is no local activities showing up (windows search is enabled for outlook), emails/attachment is blank.

  • If you are using this with an exchange email, you have to use "Cached Exchange Mode" so that outlook downloads a copy to your local machine. If not the activities will not show up.

  • PS. Click Tools, Account Settings, Double click the email account (exchange account) check the box to enable Cached Exchange Mode.

  • @bensonk2 - THANKS! We recently upgraded our servers here at the office (i.e. two days ago) and I couldn't figure out what had caused me to lose the OSC functionality. This did it! @Michael Affronti - maybe something for the FAQ?

  • Same problems as @travis.. No activity of any kind shows up. Linkedin contacts are downloaded and photos show under mail messages. I'm on 2007 on XP. Exchange cached mode, desktop search installed and working for other email searches. Installed, uninstalled twice, repaired office. Removed OSC and Linked registry entries, ran scanost and scanpst and generally checked everything carefully. I'm pretty knowledgeable with Outlook /Excange, so I'm quite sure this is a bug.

  • To all of you 64bit people... #1. How many 64 bit versions of ANY Application are out in the real world right now? (NOT in Beta) #2. From a purely "logical" standpoint, if you were a software manufacturer or developer, would it make sense to test your product EXCLUSIVELY on another Beta product? How about on a Beta product that less than half the testers are actually using? Would it make sense, that since the product can also be used in Office 2003, Office 2007 AND Office 2010 beta (ALL are 32bit applications - with the exception of the new Office 2010 BETA 64bit) that it is developed FIRST for that (32bit) platform? Since these are ALL BETA Products (Social Connector, LinkedIn connector and Office 2010) it makes complete sense to start your testing on the 32bit version, then move to the 64bit version. Does that not make sense?

  • PS. I'm not talking about 64bit Operating Systems... 32bit applications run just fine on a 64bit OS. (obviously there are some advantages that will come with moving the application to 64bit also... but thats another topic)

  • @Franklin - not sure what else to check. When I enabled cached exchange mode, the history showed right away. (something server side not allowing you to download to your local machine?) It even works with my Outlook Connected account (MSN email) I did notice that the pictures..etc.. took a few minutes and also required me to restart outlook for them to show up... (outlook had to download the email, then the connector had to index..etc.. restarting outlook when this was complete made everything show up as expected)

  • Not showing email activities is definitely a bug. I followed all the instructions and have my windows search enabled. I noticed that "Windows Search Email Indexer" mssphtb.dll is automatically disabled in outlook, when I enable it and close outlook it gets disabled again.

  • I lost my People pane.

No longer have button on VIEW tab for People pane. I have Navigation, Reading, & TO-DO Bar, but no longer have People pane available. Any body know how to get it reinstalled?

I did uninstall the Social Connector and Installed the update, which did not crash Outlook, but did not change anything either. Any ideas? dhenley@sc2services.com

  • @dave are you running 64-bit Outlook 2010 Beta?

  • I have exactly the same problem as mai. My Windows Search Email Indexer is always disabled. When I re-enable it (and also try the method of re-enabing mssphtb.dll) it is always disabled once I restart Outlook! Please note: I've tried completely uninstalling both BCM and Office and the re-installing, but the same behaviour always occure. I've also tried disabling pretty much every other add-in, but no joy. I've searched hard for an answer but it doesn't seem to be an especially common problem. I also fear that this may be the root of the problems I am having in BCM with linking and tracking. Another strange behaviour I am having that may well be linked to it is that the social connector shows practically no history. Occasionally it will show some quite random history for an incoming email (often taken from archive file) but it is at best sporadic, and shows absolutely NO history for ayone within my company's Active Directory, which is probably the most important feature for me. I'd be grateful if you could let me know of any way to make this work as I am struggling... I've noted it (along with many other problems) with the smilies, but get no response.

  • Are you using Outlook 2003, 2007 or 2010 beta?

    32bit Outlook or 64bit Outlook?

Do you have any other applications that are "pluged in" to outlook? (i.e. Netmeeting, Business contact Manager, CRM..etc..)

Are you using "Cached Exchange Mode"?

  • Please keep in mind, this is a BETA product. As you know with BETA products, there will be BUGS, there will be issues, things may not always play nice together. Feedback to the software company (in this case Microsoft) will Seldomly be responded to on an individual basis. How many submissions do you suppose a PUBLIC BETA like Office 2010 and this Social Adapter get on a daily basis? 20? (lol) More like Thousands... (You aren't going to get a one on one tech to correct your issues as you go...) Submit your feedback, but don't expect a response. Your response will hopefully be a working final release.

  • Suggestion: One of the features that I like about "Xobni" is that it suggests possible contacts when it doesn't match the email address exactly. (i.e. The LinkedIn Connector only shows their linkedin profile if the email address matches exactly.) Is this something that might be included in a future release?
