Outlook Gets Social with LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace

Update:

We have heard that some Microsoft Outlook 2010 Beta users are experiencing crashes when trying to use the new Outlook Social Connector (OSC) Beta (February Update) that was released today along with the LinkedIn Provider for Outlook.

The OSC that was included with the Outlook 2010 Beta must be uninstalled before installing the new OSC Beta (February Update). After the February OSC update is installed, the LinkedIn Provider for Outlook can then be installed.

This information is included on our Download Center page for the OSC Beta (February Update).

If you have installed the OSC Beta (February Update) and Outlook is crashing, follow the steps outlined on this page. As a reminder, only 32-bit Outlook is supported right now.  64-bit support for the OSC will be available soon.

In November 2009, we announced both the beta of Microsoft Office 2010 as well as the Outlook Social Connector. The Outlook Social Connector brings together communications history, contact information, and professional and social networking information into the Outlook experience.

We are continuing to deliver on that vision today with two new announcements. First, we’re proud to announce the public beta of LinkedIn for Outlook, which will enable our millions of Office 2010 Beta users to connect the OSC to a public network for the first time. Second, we're excited to announce partnerships with Facebook — the most popular social Web site in the world, and MySpace — a leading social platform connecting people through expression, content, and culture.

LinkedIn for Outlook brings together the most popular professional network with the world’s leading professional Inbox. Here are some of the things you can do today by downloading the beta:

  • Connect to your LinkedIn account to view your colleagues’ status updates and photos next to an e-mail message they sent you.
  • Your colleagues’ latest contact information from LinkedIn automatically updates his or her Outlook contact. Whenever someone changes a phone number, e-mail address, or other contact details, it’s automatically updated in Outlook — you are always up to date.
  • Synchronize your mobile phone with Outlook to stay up-to-date — you don’t have to worry about keeping track of new phone numbers and contact info — contacts’ information from the Web is synchronized to your mobile phone.
  • Grow your professional network directly from within your Inbox — add colleagues with one click.

We are proud to continue partnering with LinkedIn and we want to congratulate them on a job well done. With this beta, our customers are able to stay connected to their network without leaving the Outlook Inbox.

Our vision for Outlook (and the OSC) is to provide a communications hub that is vital to both professional and personal communications; by integrating with both Facebook and MySpace, Outlook 2010 enables you to connect not only to co-workers and colleagues, but with all of your friends and family within your Outlook Inbox.

Facebook for OutlookFacebook for Outlook

You can view friends’ activities, photos, and status updates within Outlook — as well as grow your network by adding friends from the same view. Both Facebook for Outlook and MySpace for Outlook will be available later this year as our official release of Office 2010 approaches.

Finally, its important to mention that with multiple professional and social networks available for the Outlook Social Connector, the design of the OSC is such that your privacy and permissions settings on each of the networks you use are represented and respected within this experience. For example, if your profile photo and job title are publicly listed on a given network, then OSC users will see your photo and job title when receiving an e-mail from you (if they use that same network). Similarly, if you choose to restrict profile access on a given network, the OSC will respect that privacy. The goal of the OSC is not to create another social network or set of privacy settings for you to manage, but rather to bring the networks you already value and use to the Outlook experience.

To recap, here is what you can do today to get started with the Outlook Social Connector.

  1. Download the Office 2010 Beta at www.Office.com/beta
  2. Update to the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector using the instructions on the Microsoft Download Center.
  3. Get the LinkedIn download for the Outlook Social Connector at www.LinkedIn.com/outlook.
  4. Keep watching the Outlook team blog for availability of the Facebook and MySpace download for the Outlook Social Connector at http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/.

Note To use LinkedIn for Outlook requires the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector, which supports the 32-bit English version of the official Microsoft Office 2010 Beta. The beta of the Outlook Social Connector is provided as-is, is subject to change without notice, and does not include formal product support from Microsoft.

We are thrilled to reach this significant milestone with LinkedIn and to welcome both Facebook and MySpace to the Outlook Social Connector ecosystem. Stay tuned to this blog for more information from the Outlook team as we get closer to the launch of Office 2010!

  • I'm still having issues (on Vista x32 with Office Beta 2010 x32.) I've followed the instructions to remove both old versions + repaired Office + have deleted the registry key referred to above, along with every mention of socialconnector.dll in the registry. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\SocialConnector I then installing the latest osc.exe, and run Outlook - but it reliably crashed on startup - every time. Any suggestions?

  • I have gone to Programs and Features under Windows & Home Premium 64-bit Control Panel and clicked change for Office 2010 Home Beta, but the only thing it asks is to repair - no further options. 1 - Has anyone run into this issue and/or know why? 2 - I went into Com add-ins and removed Social Connector and then added the new one for download/ This worked at first but now outlook crashes if the Linked-in and/or Social Connector are fully running. By "fully running" I mean Outlook boots ups with the new contact information window below an email but the buttons are dead as opposed to the buttons being highlighted, signaling functionality. Anyone else come across this issue?

  • E-mails and content does not show in the People Pane. I successfully loaded the People Pane and the Linked in Connector two days ago. I have the new LinkedIn contacts list in Outlook and my LinkedIn contacts have their picture show up in the people pane when I select an e-mail message. However, the rest of the people pane is blank (no emails, etc.) for the person whom the current e-mail was from. I've re-stared outlook several times and it has been running for two days now. Also when I restart it, I get a message with a link to find out why I don't see any of my contacts other e-mails... but when I click the link, the link doesn't work or is old: go.microsoft.com/fwlink. Any advice on getting the emails to show or finding this reference? Thanks!!

  • Is anyone from Microsoft still following this thread? I'm concerned that the serious bug I reported above several days ago still hasn't been acknowledged.

  • Thanks to everyone for using the Outlook Social Connector with the new LinkedIn provider! I know some users are running into issues while using the Beta and I sincerely thank you for taking the time to report them here on the blog. Here are some of the top issues we're seeing in the comments along with some updates from Outlook: 1. I installed the OSC Beta and/or LinkedIn provider and now Outlook 2010 Beta crashes. > You need to follow the directions for *uninstalling* the version of the OSC that came with the Outlook 2010 Beta (from November) before installing the new OSC Beta (released on 2/15). You can follow the directions at the top of this blog post to get back into a 'clean' state with the Beta before installing the OSC Beta update and then the LinkedIn provider. We apologize for the confusion around how to upgrade the original Outlook 2010 Beta. The folks at howtogeek.com have an awesome article with pictures that describes the process: www.howtogeek.com/.../our-look-at-the-linkedin-social-connector-for-outlook. Thanks to everyone there for compiling this great guide! 2. The new OSC+LI doesn't work on 64-bit Outlook 2010 Beta. >We know that 64-bit support is very important to our Outlook 2010 customers. We plan on supporting 64-bit providers when we ship Office 2010 this year and are working with LinkedIn to 64-bit enable theirs. 3. What if I'm running the Office RC build? >If you're one of the lucky folks who are using the Office 2010 RC (Release Candidate) build, then you *do not* have to install the OSC Beta update from 2/15. The Outlook 2010 RC build contains the necessary OSC update for running the LinkedIn provider. Again, you must be running the 32-bit version of Outlook 2010 RC. 4. Local content (emails, meetings, etc.) are not showing up after I install the OSC and/or Outlook. >The OSC relies on Windows Desktop Search to have indexed your e-mail to display it in the People Pane. As long as search is working, meaning you can see results when you type in the Outlook search box, then the OSC will display content for your colleagues. If after a few minutes you don't see anything, you may need to restart Outlook. This is a bug in the Beta that we are addressing for the final version. 5. I see an error dialog when trying to add someone as a colleague on LinkedIn. >This happens because the user doesn't not have an account on LinkedIn at all. We hope to improve this experience for the final version. If you wish to add this person, you first need to send them an invite from the LinkedIn site. 6. What's up with contacts? > There have been several comments and questions about how contacts work with the OSC: how and why we sync them to a separate folder for each network, how lookup and matching works, and what we plan on doing in the future. This is a sizable issue that we will be addressing in a new blog post very soon. Stay tuned to the Outlook Team Blog for more details. Thanks again everyone! Keep using the OSC, download the LinkedIn provider, and send us your feedback! michael affronti

  • Thanks to Michael Affronti for picking up on some of the comments. I hope that the final version is able to integrate better with the default Contacts folder too. Perhaps take a leaf out of Plaxo's book! That syncs well with the folders that already exist. I have >8000 contacts (inc >450 LinkedIn). Too many to get in my phone, so I have the default Contacts folder with a few hundred "regular/important" contacts sync with the phone. All the rest, including many LinkedIn connections are in a second folder. Plaxo handles syncing with both folders (and provides a de-duper)with few problems and without the need for another Outlook folder. Get the LinkedIn/Outlook connecter sorted and you have a winner I think.

  • I'm also having trouble with the linkedin login. Everything works are described, except when I try to connect linkedin my username and password are rejected.

My username is also my email address.

  • Same problem here. "Invalid user name or password".

  • Same here, I have the invalid user name or password error message, when trying to connect to linkedin. I use the outlook 2010 and also I have win7 pro.

  • Bump Password issue

  • Linked in social connector Outlook 2007 32 bit will not accept valid linkedin user id and password even when logged into linkedin successfully on same machine. See several mentions of this above. Resolution?

  • I have installed this on three separate computers, two with windows 7 (64bit) and Office 2007 and One with Windows 7 (64bit) and Office 2010 (32bit) without any issues (other than the ones I mentioned earlier) No password problems, no install problems...

  • @mo and several others: sorry for the issues you're having with login to LinkedIn. We believe this is due to a bug with escaping certain characters from passwords. We're investigating with the LinkedIn team. Thanks again. michael affronti

  • I have Windows Search 4.0 installed and running; contact activities are not showing up even though instant search works fine. Is there a workaround for this?

  • I said: > I have Windows Search 4.0 installed and running; contact activities are not showing up even though instant search works fine. Is there a workaround for this? To clarify, I'm running Office 2007 Small Business, on a Windows XP SP3 machine.
