Fix for issue with message sizes in Outlook 2010 Beta

Recently, we posted information on the Outlook blog about a bug in the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta that increases the message size of some e-mails messages sent from the Microsoft Outlook 2010 Beta. The Office team has been hard at work building a fix for this issue, which is available immediately.

This fix prevents future messages from consuming unnecessary space, but doesn’t resize existing messages. If you reply or forward an existing message that is affected by this bug, it remains enlarged. To help reduce the impact of large messages on your Inbox and mailbox storage quota, you can also run Conversation Cleanup (new feature in Outlook 2010) on large folders. On the Home tab, in the Delete group, click Clean Up. Also, consider starting new message conversations or threads when possible.

Although Office 2010 is in Beta and is not final, we are both excited and humbled by the fact that more than 2.5 million people have downloaded and used the Beta. We want to make sure you have a great experience with Office 2010. If you are using the Office 2010 Beta, take a moment to download this important fix.

  • Which builds where affected? Is this fix only for the beta or also for the RC?

  • The two links you provide are for downloading KB980028. According to the MS Download Center, KB980028 is a fix for Word 2010, not Outlook 2010. In fact, the download contains the patch files word.msp & word.xml.

  • Bob's comment about the download center listing KB980028 as a fix for Word 2010 is true. Are these the wrong links?

  • Those are the right links. Though the problem is most readily manifested in Outlook, the root cause is in Word 2010.

  • @mriw- The fix provided is for Beta builds. Later builds have this fix.

  • Has this fix been rolled out Internally in MS? We're receiving numerous emails fro MS folk >1MB which is causing havic with our mailbox sizes.

  • Hi, Is 14.0.4734.1000 affected by this or should we install the update? -brian

  • It doesn't work...not 32 bit anyway. When one clicks on the link (IE, FF, Chrome) does not open. DNS error. Tried several times.

If I had your email address I can send screen shots!

  • I accidentally turned off the Favorites in the Navigation Pane and cannot get it turned back on. It does not show up in the drop down of the Navigation Pane Ribbon.

  • This is actually an update to Word 2010 not Outlook 2010 itself. I have installed only Outlook 2010 and when I run the update it shows: Update for Microsoft Word 2010 - Beta (KB980028)

There are no products affected by this package installed on this system. Another fail. Same as Conversation view in outlook that only uses Subject. What a fail.

  • One issue I have daily is Outlook 2010 crashes each time I open an email from 5 or 6 people. Outlook crashes also if I have preview pane open and I click on the email. Any news on when this might get fixed? Apparently this is happening for a number of people. Here's more detail:

  • Thank You for the patch.

This bug was most insidious, because if you weren't watching your sent items you didn't know i was doing it again until you couldn't send any new mail out. Hope this fixes it permanently. Rob

  • I dont know?loss for words.help!

  • Does anyone know how to import my contacts from outlook in 2010? After downloading the beta version the contacts do not import.

  • Need information on importing contacts from 2007 into 2010
