The Outlook team has recently been made aware of a serious bug / flaw with the recently announced Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook, and as a result we wanted to provide the Outlook user community with additional details around this problem as well as information on how to address it.
The installation of the Google Apps Sync plugin disables Outlook’s ability to search any and all of your Outlook data. When a Google Apps user installs the sync plugin for Outlook, the plugin modifies a registry key which disables Windows Desktop Search from indexing and providing search functionality for all Outlook data, not just the Outlook data being synchronized from GMail. Because Outlook search relies upon the indexing performed by Windows Desktop Search, Outlook search functions are broken as a result. It is also important to note that uninstalling the plugin may not fix the issue.
Outlook users who are considering the Google Apps Sync plugin should become aware of this issue. If you have already installed this plugin, please take note of the steps below to address the issue.
For Outlook users who have already installed this plugin or have experienced this issue, the only remedy is to change the registry key that was modified by the plugin (click the link for more detail on the registry key):
1) Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard, and type “REGEDIT”. This will open the Windows Registry Editor.
2) Browse to the following: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search"
3) You will manually have to reset the value of “PreventIndexingOutlook” to “0” (without the quotes). To do this, right click on the “PreventIndexingOutlook” key, select “Modify…”, then change the value data to “0”.
4) Close the registry editor.
The Outlook team has been made aware of a second issue that affects users of the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector which syncs Windows Live Hotmail with Outlook. When a user has the Outlook Connector installed, then installs the Google Apps Sync plugin, the next time Outlook is started an error message comes up stating that “some functionality will be disabled”. The Google Apps Sync plugin modifies a registry key that is used by the Outlook Connector, which results in users seeing this error message. When confronted with this error message, we recommend that users click “Yes” to enable functionality. The Outlook Connector will then continue to function normally. The Outlook Connector will reset this registry key to the correct value.
Finally, we have brought these issues to Google’s attention, and have offered to work with them to find a resolution for our mutual customers. As soon as this is done, we will publish more information.

Looks like STORE_PUSHER_OK would have gotten Google what they wanted without ruining the party for everyone else:

Update: Google has posted a new entry on their blog with some updates and an explanation for why they turned off Windows Desktop Search (as well as several other Outlook add-ins you may use) when using Google Apps Sync. It is worth noting that the only way to return Outlook Search to its default state (using WDS) is still to either uninstall Google Apps Sync or to modify the registry key as stated earlier in this post. We will provide more information on the Outlook blog as it becomes available. googleenterprise.blogspot.com/.../whats-different-with-google-apps-sync.html Dev Balasubramanian
Thanks for the information. very helpful.
Google Sync for Outlook also seems to have broken my installation of Business Contact Manager for Outlook. I installed Google Sync for Outlook earlier this afternoon, and now Business Contact Manager no longer runs. (My database seems to have been wiped out!) After installing Google Sync, I restarted Outlook, which then tried to do what it thought was an initial install of BCM, even though it's been installed for months. I initially cancelled the re-install of BCM, but later agreed. However something is botched -- it is not able to restore from a backup database file.
It is not the only way to disable Outlook search. In Win7, change your index location to another drive (say D). Now shutoff the system and remove that drive and start back up again. Search is dead, and worse, the UI to fix it fails, so you can't change it back to C. :(
I followed the isntructions to manually fix the search issue.
I was able to locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\
But I do not have folder "Windows Search"
Does anyone know how to add it back in?
I uninstalled Google Apps Sync, but this blog tells me I need to reset the registry key "PreventIndexingOutlook" in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search". The key "PreventIndexingOutlook" does not exist on my machine (now). Is this specific to Windows 7? The only key other than (Standard) in this Location is "DisableBackoff" (=Dword 0 here). Is this OK?
After installing Google Apps Sync, a new profile was created in the local machine. This is causing that every time I start outlook I have to choose which profile to use. I already uninstall the plugin (because of this and several other drawbacks), but the profile was not uninstalled. Is there a way to remove this profile created by Google Apps Sync?
The link below explains how to remove a profile, but following the instructions, in my machine there is noy "Mail" option when clicking "User Account". I'm running under a Windows Vista 64bits.

This is a reminder that Google Apps represents a risk to users, which business users should be especially aware of, and the risks of Google Apps are not limited to the vulnerabilities ingerent in Internet usage. www.timacheson.com/.../google_apps_are_a_risk_for_business_users
Dev, I have browsed this far but can't go any further. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\
there is no Windows Search listed. Do I need to reinstall Outlook? If so how to do given I downloaded Office 2010 as part of the volume license program, I don't have a disk.
I have the same problem : it impossible to get Google Desktop indexation on Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 !!!!
The "PreventIndexingOutlook" dont exist on Register !!!!!
What is the solution???
any workaround to get google desktop search to index outlook 10 emails?
Can anyone respond to the multiple posts regardingwhat to do if there is no "Windows Search" in the register?
Folks, these are great questions for Microsoft Answers (answers.microsoft.com/.../default.aspx). This is where I go to get answers and you all have a variety of issues on a variety of platforms and versions and such, so looking for an answer there or asking a question there (being as specific as you can) would be your best bet to getting a satisfactory answer.
I just tried a regedit but when I look for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search" I do not see the last folder "\Windows Search" as an option. An suggestions?
Under "\Windows" I only see these folders:
CurrentVersion
DeviceInstall
DriverSearching
Installer
IPSec
Network Connections
NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator
safer
System
WSDAPI
