Getting help with the Office Outlook Connector

As many of you know, the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Windows Live Hotmail recently exited beta. This blog has seen a lot of traffic and has received many comments about the connector since it first arrived. It is great to see such enthusiasm! Since the community was so active during the beta period, we were able to track down and fix more issues and ultimately release a better product.

Since the connector shipped, we’ve gotten a lot more great feedback and questions. Answers to lots of the common questions, including installation, basic functionality, and issues related to upgrading from the beta, are below.

The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document has some great information in it for beta testers and for customers who have upgraded from the beta, so please take a look. The FAQ can be found on the Microsoft Download Center along with the installation files for the latest release. The FAQ is only available in English and is available in Word 97-2003 and Word 2007 formats.

Take a look!

  • Jared, thanks for the note, I just encountered the Error 4102. It's impractical for me to perform the remove/re-add account fix. Could you please add a comment on this blog post when the fix is available, so those who are waiting can subscribe to it? Also, I appreciate it would be speculation, but could you please estimate how long the fix will take? Are we talking 1-2 days? 1 week? 1 month? Many thanks

    Rob

  • Jared,

I am glad that this issue is being resolved. I wish I would have known not to flag emails though, as my email is now down again. I am a fellow programmer, and I know how demand is always now now now, but as the user for once, please get this out for us all ASAP! Thanks!

  • I have the OC for Hotmail (final release version) installed on 4 different PC's. All of them were working fine until the last 24 hours or so. Two of my machines crapped out about 6:45PM EDT last night (10/30) and my laptop initially sync'ed this morning once and now is dead as well. Is something going on with the service? Not that I have the OC installed on Office 2007 on all PC's and 3 of them are XP while the other is Vista. Any else seeing a similar problem today? Thanks, Jonathan

  • I should have also mentioned that the logs show this error occurring about every 5 minutes: Time: 10/31/2007 9:20:36 AM

    Error in Mail

  • Neutronic - I got the same error. The new improvement means you have to go to hotmail through a browser to read your messages!! What an improvement!! Fortunately Outlook 2007 with Microsoft Corrupter, oops Connector, still works with Yahoo pop mail. Funny thing, I keep asking myself - why have I been paying a subscription fee to HOTMAIL when Microsoft has only made my life miserable for the last month (since that horrible day I installed MS CORRUPTER). Here is my synch log: Subject: Synchronization Log:

  • I think that Jared's comment: "This is a known issue and we are working on a fix. In the mean time, to avoid this issue, do not make client-side changes to items (marking items as read/unread, adding categories, flagging items, etc.)." ...will go down in the annals of marvelous but impossible suggestions. If you READ your email (why else would one HAVE an email account??) you create the immutable class error. So the suggestion is that we uninstall and reinstall our MS Connector accounts every single time we read an email. Nothing personal, I work in software and so have made my own share of funny suggestions. But this is classic.

  • "backup your data to PST by using Outlook's Import/Export wizard, remove your account from Outlook and re-add it back to Outlook." --- all data is hold at Live.com servers, so this makes no sense. Would messages get duplicated and re-uploaded? Anyway, I deleted account in Outlook, resynced new account (downloaded 600MB), all went well, but after initial resync, again 4102 error. I guess I did read one email by accident ;)

  • Re the error 4102. Have removed and added account, as suggested, and it worked for a short time (half an hour) and is now no longer synching with outlook. I am synching two accounts - hotmail and windows office live plus.

  • I remember there being a news item about connector coming out of Beta. Isn't Beta when you make all the changes, refine the product and fix the errors? Strikes me that that's what we are going through now. This is the second time in a month that we've had a severe mail outage. Perhaps it's time to give IMAP through Google a go!

  • Hi, Would love to use connector / hotail but I have over 1500 contacts in my phone/outlook contacts folder Any thoughts on if/when the 1000 contactslimit will be lifted ? Also tried to run a seperate contacts frolder in another pst but Sync Center does not seem to allow you to poit a diffenernt pst's for different things

  • I'm getting this error on two machines now: Time: 11/5/2007 9:26:13 AM

Error: 4104. This is now appearing on two machines. It seems like all my outlook connector accounts work for about two-four weeks and then start throwing this error and stop synching. What is going on here?

  • Jared, I'm consistently getting two errors - 4104 and 4350. Your suggestion above (check Junk Mail senders/recipients entries) did work - I got rid of the erro 4350. However, error 4104 persists. Any idea? BTW: Why is the Sync Issues folder hidden? I can't open it to look for more information... Best regards, Igor

  • I'm a Microsoft Small Business Partner, though a small one (just the two of us). I've moved our own accounts to Office Live Premium (we use email and sharepoint) and switched off our Exchange server (think of the power saving). I also advise businesses as to the suitability of systems like Office Live, so I wanted to get some real experience with it before I push endless clients towards Microsoft. The web-side I'm quite happy with. Outlook Connector, however, has been a nightmare. This REALLY needs fixing with some urgency - at the moment I can't recommend Office Live to anyone who wants to access it from Outlook. We use Vista Business with Office 2007. Outlook Connector Build is 1063. It works for a while, but then email stops sync'ing. If I go through the export/uninstall/reboot/reinstall/config routine it works again for a short while but stops. I also noticed that calendar items downloaded are 1 hour out. Could this time difference cause the problem ? Today I got a more detailed error report so I'm posting in case it helps. By the way - I can read the mail just fine on the web and contrary to the report below, email ISN'T sync'd. Outlook Connector Version 12.0.4518.1063 Account: mick@silkstonesolutions.co.uk Signed in successfully at 06/11/2007 09:47:19 Mail: Last successfully refreshed at 09:51. • I am sorry to say this but I have been a Microsoft customer and supporter since 1987 and I have not had this level of frustration trying to get Outlook 2010 to sunch mail and calendar with live.  There has been many frustrating events dealing with MS products but this one is ludicrous.  They are both your products you would think that the synch would be seamless.  You don't have to be an IT expert (and I am) to be able to synchronize your mail, calendar and contacts with the Live account from a PC running Windows 7 Pro.

Furthermore, I use a Blackberry and within minutes I was able to synch my contacts, calendar and mail with Gmail.  I can't do the same with Live.  I don't want to use Gmail.

I have tried a mirriad of suggestions from the different blogs and some are from MS employees.

    Can you help?
