Today, I have to use Active Sync/Windows Mobile Device Center for synchronization of Onenote Mobile 2010 files with my computer.

When is it possible to synchronize Onenote Mobile 2010 files with Windows Live or Windows Live Skydrive?

Is this feature released yet?

Where's the ability to insert a document or take a screen shot or a web clip?  I've been looking forward to the OneNote web app more than any other MS product in recent memory, but without this functionality it loses almost all of its usefulness to me!

It's a start.

I'm really disappointed that I can't move existing OneNote notebooks to Windows Live, then edit them in the browser.  Cut-n-paste from a local notebook is disappointing and frustrating too.

But I realize this is just the first version, so hats off to you.

Here is a problem I encountered:

I created a new notebook in OneNote 2010 and picked Skydrive as the location so that I can share it later. We are looking for a new apartment and I want to use this as the place where we collect all the listings of interest we find, and share the notebook with my wife. So I did. I found 18 listings and just clicked the "Send to OneNote" button in IE on the page of each one, giving me 18 nice pages in my OneNote section for our housing search. Each page has text, and maybe 3-4 pictures, all quite small.

Well, and this is where the troube starts. I now have an error on top of the section in OneNote saying "This section cannot be synced because it exceeds the maximum system download file size. Click here to see help online about this error" (the link just brings you to a OneNote marketing site, entirely useless).

The first observtion is this: If 18 web pages exceed the size limit of the Skydrive sync, then this is just entirely uselss. This is not a large notebook section by ANY standard.

Here are some more observations:

- I then tried to do a backup of the notebook and looked at the .one file for the relevant section in the backup location. It is 65 MB. I guess this explains the error, given that Skydrive has a 50 MB limit.

- I think a 50 MB limit per section is way too small, I predict people will constantly run into it, simply because OneNote is used by so many people to just dump all sorts of stut into. If we now have to consider size limitations all the time, this is a big downer.

- The real problem is that the limit is on a whole section, but there is no hint what exactly causes the problem. So, which of my 18 pages causes the problem? I have no way of finding out.

- I find the 50 MB limit PER file on Skydrive quite reasonable. But a OneNote section is much more like a folder, that holds lots of stuff together (like images, scanned pdfs, audio recordings etc). To have the limit now on the folder just rules out almost all interesting scenarios.

- In my particular case, I suspect that some of the pictures are the root cause of the problem. In the webpage they are displayed quite small, but most likely they might be larger and just be scaled down in the web page (although I'm sure not a single one exceeds the 50 MB limit, it is just the sum of all pictures that exceeds this limit). So what we have here is that I see small pictures in OneNote, that are probably much larger in terms of stoarge because they are scaled. So one good option would be to have something like Word's "compress picture" option, where the resolution of the picture stored is adjusted to the size it has on the notebook. But again, I couldn't find anything like that.

- I feel in general that my scenario is the most normal, non-special case I can think of. You surf around, and send some pages to OneNote. If I think about my Mom and Dad, they would be entirely stuck at this point, because the error message gives zero indication on what to do, what the cause of the problem is and in general how to proceed. My Mom and Dad would (rightly) conclude at this point that the whole thing just doesn't work.

I guess now that you've RTMed there is little you can do in the rich client to solve this problem. Maybe you could still increase the size limit for .one files on Skydrive fairly quickly?

I just realized that if I have my notebook in sync with the web app. if I create a link to a page, paragraph or section from onenote 2010, it creates link with https:// and not a onenote:\\\ to open it with the software. Is there some option to go back to the original function keeping the book connected to the web app?

hmm.... its a basic rich text editor... i can't do stuff like I do in OneNote... hardly something that you can proudly show off :-) Take a look at competitors like ZohoNotebook... (unfortunately that one has no desktop app).

Can we get an Android app for this?

Installed office 2010 (home and office) on my pc  (win7) and office mobile 2010 on my HTC_HD2.  All sync works fine exept for onenote.

An error message occur after every sync, with the message: (translated from Norwegian)  "Unsuccessful sync.  One Note needs support".  OneNote files is transfered from pc to the device, but when I try to open a file, It tells me: "there is no program linked to this file. Open the app. first and then the file from the app."    

But  there is no option for opening a file in the OneNote app.

At first I had no interest in OneNote and was looking at Evernote for one reason: I need portability, being able to read and edit my notes no matter where I am, what computer I'm using. I was very happy to find out that ONENOTE has a Web App that syncs with the software. Even if that was quite limited as compared to the desktop software at least I thought that I could access and write to it even if I would be working on a computer that does not have OneNote installed. While this is not as portable as Evernote. (Btw please make a portable (USB drive) version of the software as the whole idea of a notebook is portability !!!).

THE BIG PROBLEM - My first document contains text clips pasted from different web pages. I loved to see that in seconds it was updating in the One Note Web App too. Up to a point later when I noticed the web app gave an error: "OneNote App encountered an unexpected error." -Restart or Exit being the only options - tried both but no good. Restarted the browser, tried firefox instead of IE8 (win 7) - NO GOOD. Created a new online One Note document - works. So what is in that note that crashes the app? It's plain text, very little formatting. Played with the drawing tool at one point but erased it. Tried to clean up invisible elements: I found some empty text boxed and erased them, used the eraser all over the page to make sure there is no drawings left but that did not help. If that would be the problem it would not be acceptable - the software should be programmed to sync correctly the text and images (could covert unknown/incompatible elements to images just for the online WEB APP and maintain the original object properties for the full software version).

Hi, I use Live Mesh to keep my various computers synchronised. I see you mention only Live skydrive. Can all the exciting features you've mentioned also work with livemesh or must I migrate to skydrive first?
