Erica Rhein started it. She posted a comment on Facebook declaring her complete dependence on VLOOKUP. "I use Pivot Tables and VLOOKUP every day. I would be screwed at my job without it." To Bill's formula-possessed mind this statement

re: Today's Giveaway: Odes to VLOOKUP (It ain't over until the formulas stop singing)

The only flaw with Excel...

When you're using a localized version then not only do you get translated menu's and options (which anyone would expect) but also the whole function naming scheme is translated. No offense intended here; but that is something which I consider a massive downside.

Over here in Holland we don't get such excellent tutorials like the stuff you guys are working out here. As such... "VLOOKUP" may leave some of my fellow "Dutchies" wondering what the heck you guys are talking about.

Over here "VLOOKUP" translates back to "VERT.ZOEKEN". ugh... In this case they managed to get it right a little bit, but more than once have I had to look extremely hard to find wth they means.. "find()" isn't "zoeken()" for example (the literal translation of "to find". Nah; its "vind.alles()" which could translate back to "look for everything" or "find everything".

Honestly; when it comes to Excel they should have left the functions alone IMO. Us Dutch will realize that "find" is something to use to 'find' something. IMO the whole translation is only making it harder on the power users to find the stuff they need. Especially in combination with excellent stuff such as this blog (no kidding and no joking; I already pointed quite a few friends over here, and that is something I don't do often).

BUT... apart from that... Excellent article.
