Power Tip: Estimate the complexity of an Access development project

Today’s Power Tip comes from Brandon with OpenGate Software, offering Microsoft Access products for Access users of every experience level, including UI Builder, Designer, and Dashboard Builder for Microsoft Access.

As we all know, it's never easy to estimate how much work will be involved when creating a new Access database. To help with that, OpenGate Software has produced a white paper designed to help Access users (particularly newer users) figure out how complex their prospective Access database may be, and what skills they may need to get the job done.

  • Here's a quote from my customer whom I helped to understand why he no longer (starting from A2007) can reference custom public properties in Access queries and forms: www.experts-exchange.com/Q_25192188.html "I don't understand what Microsoft is doing to MS Access. They are ruining it more and more with each release. It's like Microsoft doesn't want anyone to develop it into an application anymore." Right on target.

  • Vadim,

The impression I get from the developers who have spent some time using the various Access 2010 betas is that Microsoft have put a lot of effort into it with the result that developers will have a lot more to use compared to previous versions. The use of data macros, which are similar to triggers and stored procedures, as well as the new web databases will mean Access can do a whole lot more. I for one am really looking forward to its release and have a new customer already wanting to use some of the new functionality.

As for your particular problem, it is really frustrating when this sort of thing happens. I don't have an Experts Exchange account. How did you get over the problem? Did you put your values into a hidden control? Alan

  • Vadim @ can you send me more info about this custom properties--I'm not aware of any breaking changes in the area...

  • I have developed and enjoy a business process application in 2010 Beta and looking forward to full release. I have one issue with an error message popping up when I open the app on a different machine "the command or action " isn't available right now" but I'm thinking this will go away when the product is out of beta (or at least I can get a fix). Sometimes change (or upgrade) is hard but in this case it's worth it.

  • What about ms access project (access data project) adp ?????

why it stay the same from access 2003 ?????
