I got this request from a customer who is trying to analyze their environment as it pertains to Access and Excel files:
Can we use WSH and VBScript to get this type of basic information out of files in an automated fashion? Both MS Access and Excel have a well defined object model i.e. it should be easy to write a script that opens the file, queries the various collection objects, and dumps the contents (e.g. Table Names in Access, Pivot Table objects in excel, Data source names in either etc for Excel and Access 2000)?
The Office migration planner has some really good tools for understanding what is in your organization. Here is a description of the tool:
The Office Migration Planning Manager (OMPM) is a collection of tools that enables you to prepare your environment for migration to the 2007 Microsoft Office system. OMPM checks for, and reports on, file properties to help you analyze your environment and determine any issues that you might experience converting from Office 97-Office 2003 file formats to the new 2007 Office system file format.
Enjoy!

I have two free tools on my web site that providedifferent Access file information: Find Databases Wizard: The Wizard finds all the MS Access files in the location you select and classifies each file by Access version, lists all the files found in the location, and saves the data in a text-delimited file. Table Links and Connections Manager: The Connection Manager will find all the Microsoft Access files in the location you select and a report will display all table links and base string connections, including dependents of, and any connect errors grouped by: Jet Version, File Type, Linked Database Paths and linked tables, and Base Connection Strings. Separate reports are produced for .md* and .ad* files. Download from www.aadconsulting.com/freeaddins.html
Why is there no 64-bit version of Access 2007? Surely Access would benefit from the extra RAM?
There's going to be one for Access 14, according to blogs.zdnet.com/Bott
Donn,
Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I can't comment more about it as we haven't started talking publicly about what is in or out of the next version. Stay tune...
I would love to see a 64 bit version of MS Access.
Does the OMPM use WSH or VBScript to get information out of files in an automated fashion? I do not think so but as I have never used the OMPM I can not say for sure.
I think some of the emails are looking for something that would grab the information and make it available in a Table for current projects, will the OMPM do that?
