Access Runtime support for SharePoint Offline

The last few days I have pinged by several people asking about the SharePoint Offline functionality in the runtime. It seems like more and more people are starting to discover the new SharePoint link table and offline functionality. The short answer is—this isn’t supported. IOW - DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdToggleOffline is not intended to work in the runtime.

If you have a need for offline functionality then the users of your application must have a full version of Access. I heard of people rolling code to replicate offline functionality but it is a fair amount of work.

Sorry if this caused some confusion—we will get the docs updated.

  • Next question of course is, do you know if this will be possible in the next version? Thanks!

  • I don't know for sure as nothing has been decided. We are open to feedback on the issue.

  • I know my company would like to see it available in the next runtime, but I understand you can't give everything away.

  • I really wish the runtime would work 100% of the time. It should only be necessary to have the full version if you are doing development.

  • By the way: There is a new version of the Access Developer Extensions under www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx. Can someone of the Access team tell us what's new in this version? And what about the other languages like German etc?

  • I would also like to see this appear in the next version, not everyone would require the full version (unless they are the authors).

  • It always struck me as inconsistent that the runtime could not toggle online/offline with Sharepoint. With .mdb files, it is possible to synchronise with replication if I remember correctly, so why not do a similar thing with Sharepoint. The runtime has always been very much the full version minus the design tools. Now it is the full version minus the design tools minus Sharepoint online/offline toggling.

I gather that it will be missing similar functionality with the Huron SQL Services too which is disappointing. :-(

It is free though, so I suppose we can't really complain. It is good to be able to get hold of it so easily and for free. :-) Alan
