When you design a form, you can control what type of data people are allowed to enter in each field of the form. For example, you might want a field for feedback to be exactly 150 characters and not one tiny letter more.

By using data validation, you can check the data that people put in forms, and then display various messages if the data does not match conditions that you specify (such as, "La-la-la-la! I can't HEAR YOU! I said under 150 characters!")
