Crabby's Daily Tip: I did it my way— Creating your own keyboard shortcuts

If a command you use frequently doesn't have a built-in keyboard shortcut, you can create one:

  1. Click the Office button and then click Word Options.
  2. Click Customize on the left, and then click Customize next to Keyboard Shortcuts.

This opens the Customize Keyboard dialog box, where you can choose the categories and commands you want and assign keyboard shortcuts.

Note:  This works with Word and any other Office program that uses keyboard shortcuts (which is, I believe...all of them).

  • I just looked at Excel 2007 and didn't find any "Customize Keyboard" option in the Customize dialog.

Word 2010 still has the keyboard shortcut customizations, which is quite cool.

Visio has never had it, and even 2010 doesn't add this feature, which is a shame since they have made some dangerouse changes to age-old shortcuts. Ctrl + W used to zoom to fit the page to the active window (very frequently used for a drawing/diagramming program!) Now Ctrl + W closes the document!!

  • Visio Guy -- In Excel and Visio you need to go into the Macros options and do it that way.
