Outlook.com now has IMAP

As we shared on Reddit, we’re happy to announce the immediate availability of IMAP (and OAuth) for Outlook.com. Outlook.com already supports the industry’s best email connectivity with Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), which is available on the majority of smartphones and tablets, including Windows Phone, iOS, and Android devices, as well as the Windows 8 Mail app and Outlook 2013. With today’s announcement, we now have a richer email experience across devices and apps, including those not using EAS, such as Mac Mail and Thunderbird on a Mac.

Why IMAP?

While we believe that EAS is the most robust protocol for connecting to your email, with syncing in near real time, and superior battery and network efficiency, there are still some devices and apps that haven’t made the upgrade to EAS. As an older protocol, IMAP is widely supported on feature phones and other email clients such as those on a Mac. We heard your feedback loud and clear that this was important.

In addition to offering more complete device connectivity, IMAP (along with OAuth) gives developers opportunities to build third-party clients and services that offer value-added scenarios on top of your Outlook.com email. We are excited to launch the first set of services today that integrate with Outlook.com, and look forward to sharing many more in the future.

New and unique scenarios that build on your Outlook.com inbox

TripIt, Sift, Slice, motley*bunch, Unroll.me, OtherInbox, and Context.IO have taken advantage of Outlook.com’s new IMAP capability and are rolling out updates today that allow their apps and services to integrate with your Outlook.com email. We’ll have many more to share in the near future. If you’re building an app that wants to integrate with Outlook.com, we’ve provided more details at the end of this post on how to get started.

How to connect

People use a wide variety of devices and apps to connect to their email. It’s important to support you with a great email experience across those places. Starting today, we have an even greater range of options:

EAS: for the most robust access for syncing your email, calendar and contacts. When EAS is an option, you should always choose this. To see how to setup your device, follow these steps.

IMAP: for email synchronization on feature phones, and for apps that haven’t updated to EAS, like Mac Mail Thunderbird. It’s also quite popular for value-added email experiences like the ones above.  To configure your mail client to use IMAP, use the following settings:

  • Incoming IMAP

    • Server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    • Server port: 993
    • Encryption: SSL
  • Outgoing SMTP
    • Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Server port: 587
    • Encryption:  TLS

Mac: get more detailed instructions  here.

POP: for legacy clients that don’t support EAS or IMAP follow the instructions here.

Let us know what you think!  You can always leave comments on the blog or by using the feedback tool in the product. Just click on Feedback from the options menu in your Outlook.com inbox.

Developers interested in connecting to IMAP should refer to the below technical information.

Basics

Outlook.com IMAP supports IMAP version 4 revision 1 as defined by RFC 3501. In particular, Outlook.com IMAP supports the following commands:

  • AUTHENTICATE
  • LOGOUT
  • CAPABILITY
  • NOOP
  • SELECT
  • EXAMINE
  • CLOSE
  • CHECK
  • ID
  • LIST
  • LSUB
  • CREATE
  • DELETE
  • RENAME
  • SUBSCRIBE
  • UNSUBSCRIBE
  • EXPUNGE
  • APPEND
  • FETCH / UID FETCH
  • STORE / UID STORE
  • COPY / UID COPY
  • SEARCH / UID SEARCH

Authorization

Authorization for Outlook.com IMAP and SMTP are done via OAuth 2.0 using scopes wl.imap and wl.offline_access. After obtaining the access token from Microsoft account, your app/server passes the access token to IMAP and SMTP on login.

  • When the access token expires, your app/server must request a new access token from Microsoft account using the refresh token.
  • The access token must be used for its full lifetime before the refresh token is used to renew the access token

Both IMAP and SMTP accept a base64-encoded string as below, where {user@domain.com} is the user’s account, {access token} is the OAuth access token, and ^A are Ctrl-A characters (U+0001):

user={user@domain.com}^Aauth=Bearer {access token}^A^A

This is an XOAuth2 authentication negotiation example for IMAP.

C: 001 AUTHENTICATE XOAUTH2
S: +
C: {base64-encoded string}

  1. Bring back linked accounts. Without that feature, Outlook.com will never be the same again. It’s like stabbing the heart of your product and taking the best feature out, just like the Windows team did with the Start menu.

    • i think, the new "metro" start menu is the best thing MS ever developted to start applications.
there is only one thing that’s much better: Quicksilver App for Mac OS X :)

  2. Cool beans. I love Outlook.com and I’m glad to see the team is hard at work improving the service.

    • Thanks for the love! We’ll continue working hard to address any issues that IMAP users are reporting as well as the Outlook.com service overall.

  3. It’d be nice if you allowed for imap connections within outlook.com’s web portal. To be able to add external accounts only via POP stinks.

  4. Good to see, if outlook for mac supported EAS, I would’ve been all over that already. At least now I can dump the crappy pop connection

    • Like you, we also greatly prefer EAS as it syncs mail, calendar, and contacts in a battery-saving way. But since that’s not available on all devices, we’re really happy to provide IMAP to you which is worlds better than POP!

  5. That is very nice, and impressively executed – but when are you going to fix this long-standing SMTP bug:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/email/unable-to-send-from-gmail-via-smtplivecom/feb1f27b-de60-4d96-8590-7cc51b6f990c

where users of other mail services such as Gmail are unable to send messages as their Outlook accounts via smtp.live.com, getting the error message "Login to your account via a web browser to verify your account" which is unresolvable by either the end user or, apparently, by the Outlook support staff.

It’s a real blow to the openness and interoperability that you guys seem so keen to promote in your posts and comments about the modern Outlook service.

    • I thought this would be a fix too…..ughhhhhhhhh back to harassing the moderators here and gmail to give a fix lol

  6. Does IMAP support mean I can finally import my Gmail mail to Outlook.com *and retain my folder/label structure* by setting up both accounts on a mail client and copying the contents from one to the other or will Outlook.com block the copied messages?

      • Great, that’s the only thing that’s been holding me back as I have 8 years of Gmail organized into labels/folders.

        • Good to have ya, gfunk84!

          • Ben, what’s the best way to ensure that my account won’t get flagged for my mail storage growing too quickly when I make the transition? I have 5.5 GB worth of mail I want to move over and I think my dad has 10+ GB (I’ll be moving over a custom domain from free Google Apps).

  7. oh yeah, great work! now i can change my mac mail settings :)

the next thing would be, to fix the bugs with EAS and Android.
there are no sync of contacts and calendar entries after some time :(

and i can’t change to Windows Phone without an water resistant phone.

    • Try using our Android app from the play store, native mai/calendar/contacts apps don’t always have great EAS support.

      • hi

i don’t want to use the app if the contacts are readonly and you can’t add new through your phone.
this is a real problem :-/

  8. Okay, it works! Well, kind of. I have a large Inbox folder (over 7000 mails) and it can’t be opened in Thunderbird, after a minute of waiting I get "Error 9: Server Error". I hope you’re working on some optimizations too. Sometimes IMAP feels a bit slow.

    • Okay, now I found that Deleted folder also does not work, "Error 9: Server error" always appears when trying to open it.

      • Hi Pavel,

We’re looking into these intermittent error 9s that some users are reporting. Thanks for letting us know you’re seeing it!

        Ben
        Outlook.com Program Manager

  9. Please fix SMTP, as it stands I can’t send mails from Gmail via Outlook.com, instead I get the error "Login to your account via a web browser to verify your account", which doesn’t work, probably as it expects a web login from Gmail’s internal IP address.

This is a longstanding problem that many people on the support forums have raised; it would be great if you could fix it, and would demonstrate to everyone your commitment to openness and interoperability!

Apart from that, it’s an excellent email service and I appreciate the new developments.

    • Also just to note that it doesn’t only happen on Gmail, but other web-based email services too. The support staff for Outlook.com seem unable to resolve it either, and say that they are escalating it – but to who, I have no idea, as it’s been like this for months without a fix!

      Thank you

      • This is an unfortunate side affect of some features we have to protect your account and make sure it’s truly you. We’re working on a way to fix this particular scenario (sending via an ISP’s IP space) without compromising our overall protection. Sorry for the hassle.

        • Thanks for your reply, it’s a relief to get a response from someone in charge! Can I enquire what the eventual fix will entail from an end user point of view – would it be some additional form of verification?

        • Also does this imply that the email partners described above in the blog post are whitelisted for access to Outlook.com email in this way, but Gmail (as a competitor / non-partner) isn’t – so its users will receive such errors?

          • No, it doesn’t imply that, we don’t discriminate against anyone for access. The partners are using OAuth, which is our preferred method of verification for 3rd parties so you don’t need to hand your username and password to another company. If gmail switched to this, the issue would go away, but we are still working on solutions for folks who are not using OAuth, we’ll share more details when it’s ready.

          • Thanks for the information, and sorry for looking for deliberately discriminatory practices where there aren’t any.

Is it possible that this restriction may be lifted for users using two-factor authentication, so if they authenticate over SMTP with their application password, it weights their credentials as being more trustworthy than just a simple username/password login?

  10. I successfully switched to IMAP settings as shown for Mac Mail and, although I can send emails, I can’t download any from the server. Anyone else going through this? At one point, it even told me that the "imap-mail.outlook.com" wasn’t responding.

  11. IMAP doesn’t appear to work for custom domains hosted by Microsoft using Outlook.com for email.

Is this feature on the roadmap? Or have I missed some special configuration necessary?

    • AFAIK there is no special configuration required, my custom domain mail works perfectly fine without any special settings. I hope I’m not the only one though. (Do you use imap-mail.outlook.com server?)

    • Hi ner02,

As Pavel said, there is no special configuration required for custom domains. I use a custom domain personally and am able to connect to IMAP. Could you tell me the client you’re using, the server settings you have, and any errors that show up when you try to sync?

      Thanks,
      Ben

  12. I tried both in Mozilla Thunderbird and Apple Mail, I setup access to Hotmail via IMAP, when I delete a message in both of those clients, the change does not propagate to Outlook.com’s web interface. When I tried the same thing using my gmail imap account, it worked as expected.

    • Hi Eric,

I believe both Thunderbird and Apple Mail have, by default, options that do not sync deletions back up to the server (via the IMAP EXPUNGE command). For example, in Thunderbird, go to your outlook.com IMAP account settings, then "Server Settings", and check the "Clean up (‘Expunge’) Inbox on Exit" option. When you exit Thunderbird, your deletes will be synced up to the server! There is a similar option in Mac Mail.

      Hope this helps,
      Ben

    • I’m having the same issue. Messages deleted in Postbox (similar to Thunderbird) are not immediately deleted in the web client. There they do show up in the Deleted folder, but remain in their original folder as well. Not sure if this is a problem relating to Outlook.com’s IMAP implementation or a problem with the way Postbox is deleting/moving the messages.

      • Ben Poon (see above) is right indeed. ‘Clean up on exit’ does the trick, but setting ‘mail.imap.expunge_after_delete’ to ‘true’ in the Config Editor will cause messages to be deleted immediately on the server after being moved to the Deleted folder.

    • Hi Saurin,

All of us are very excited about the work that our launch partners have done! We also can’t wait to see what other developers do in the future!

  13. I had forgotten I had two factor authentication on, and had to generate an app specific password.

I have it working with no issues now from the Mac Mail.app.

    • Hi ner02,

I’m glad you were able to resolve the issue!

      Ben

  14. Wow. So let me get this right… Microsoft has been peddling an "email" system, the latest incarnation of Hotmail, which was created in 1996. And in the 17 years of begging and pleading, only now are they allowing people to connect to their "email" servers using the industry standard email protocol, one that has been around for 27 years, and even then (judging by the comments) they haven’t got that right. Are we supposed to be pleased about this?

And no, your proprietary and costly EAS is not an acceptable alternative.

    • Hi Undecided,

Thanks for your patience in waiting for IMAP. I’m sorry to see that you are still not pleased with its release.

We’re working on the small population of users who are having problems connecting to our service, whether due to client-side issues or issues on our side.

      Ben

    • Undecided, EAS is much better than IMAP.

  15. Hi Steffen,

All outlook.com accounts have access to IMAP, no matter the domain. Let us know if you run into any problems!

    Ben

  16. Right…. so, can you guys provide *any* kind of information on how one can connect to outlook.com using the default Android (gasp!) email client? It can connect so far really well with gmail (ofc) and yahoo mail, but really, even tho I have entered the information correctly (imap-mail.outlook.com, 993, SSL/TLS (with and without accept all certificates), and even when I tried my username with and without the @outlook.com I still got rejected "invalid username or password". The username and password are correct (heck, the other tab has my outlook.com mail), so what gives?

    • Hi Philip,

For Android, we do encourage the use of the Outlook.com Android app available in the Google Play store for free.

Nonetheless (regarding the default Android mail client), do you have two-step verification enabled for your Microsoft Account? If so, please see information here on how to set up your client properly: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/two-step-verification-faq

      Ben
      Outlook.com Program Manager

      • I believe that Android email apps with outlook uses Exchange Active Sync *EAS* so no need for IMAP.

      • But Outlook.com Android application needs to be improved compared to features offered by Gmail and even Y-mail. Last upgrade came in May 2013. Can you specify any feature in outlook for android apps which is unique compared to Gmail ? Active view is one of the highlighted feature for outlook.com web app but android app does not support photo preview feature !!! It seems that Outlook team is not serious about android platform as was the case with IMAP.

  17. Glad to see this added. I’m almost contemplating attaching my outlook address to my windows phone using IMAP now because of a maddening bug that the email client has in regards to EAS (also present on the Android Outlook app), found here:

    http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions/suggestions/2280806-fix-unread-state-for-moved-deleted-emails-

If you read an email and then immediately delete it or move it to another folder, the "read" state never gets changed. So when I sign into outlook.com on a computer, the message will be moved/deleted, but shown as unread. It drives me crazy. The only way to get around this is to back out of the email, manually sync, and then move/delete. The Windows metro client also behaved this way until it was fixed in 8.1. But the android app and windows phone app still exhibit this behavior, which from what I gather has been a problem for years now. Please, please, please get this fixed!!!! It seems like it’d be such an easy fix to such an irritating problem.

    • Family Frisk – this shouldn’t still be happening, we’re taking a look so we can fix

      • p.s. what version of Windows Phone are you using (7.x or 8)?

        • Not to keep spamming the comment section, but I was mistaken about Windows 8. On my non-8.1 machine, it also works correctly. Seems to be just the mobile apps that seem to be exhibiting the bug.

Sorry if I seem overly anxious about this problem, but this small, yet persistent bug is something that annoys me enough to switch platforms in the future, which I don’t want to do because I really love everything else about the phone.

          • Family Frisk – Thanks, we’re taking a look, we can reproduce as well. I hate that bug too, so we’re working on it.

        • I’m using WP 8. It’s weird because it happens with any account I add using EAS. I’ve tried two different outlook.com accounts and even a gmail account. When I recently switched my gmail to use IMAP on my phone, that problem goes away. It seems to be an EAS thing. But like I said, the outlook.com app on android acts the exact same way and the mail app in Windows 8 did as well until I upgraded to the 8.1 preview.

        • I forgot to add it also does it with my work email address. So it definitely has something to do with the app and not necessarily any specific account as far as I can tell. I recently got the GDR2 update on my phone and thought that there might be a fix for it with that update since it was recently fixed on Windows, but there was no luck there.

          Thanks for looking into it.

  18. I just can’t get the latest Thunderbird to accept the details I’ve entered for IMAP on outlook.com. It just won’t connect. The OK button is greyed out, since it apparently thinks the settings are incorrect…

    • And *finally* I got it to working in Thunderbird.

For everybody else who want to know (note that I’m not using an english version, so translations may be inaccurate):
First you enter your chosen nickname, your full email address and your password. Then you click "manual configuration". Set the "incoming" from POP to IMAP if it isn’t already. Enter the domain names in the blob post above under "host" for IMAP and SMTP. For IMAP you set it to port 993 with SSL/TLS, and for SMTP you set it to port 587 with STARTTLS or Select automatically. Under username you type your FULL email address.

Then you should be able to klick OK and start using it.

  20. Hi all, happy about the IMAP but i have a problem/question.
I’m using my Outlook.com account as IMAP protocol on Mac, my client is Outlook 2011 for Mac.
The problem i have is that using my client email messages are received with a few minutes delay.
Gmail hit the inbox instantaneously, Outlook.com messages take minutes.
    Any idea?

  22. Hi,

I have configured Mac Mail as described to use IMAP, and everything with the configuration seems to have worked fine. Unfortunately, every time I tried to get email, it times out, and I do not get any emails.

I have configured my hotmail account.

    Thank you for you help,

    Aldo

    • When I try again, I get an Error 9, instead of the time out

    • Me too. With OS X Mail, I usually get timeout. I think the system cannot handle a large mailbox (i.e. > 2000 messages).

I test with another small mailbox (1 message), everything works fine.

Also, Outlook 2011 can download a half of my inbox (around 2000 messages) but stuck after that. I don’t want to use Outlook to manage my mail since I always use OS X Mail.

      • Hi Aldo and Surfer,

I appreciate your reports of this. As I mentioned to David above, we’re definitely looking into these error 9s! I’ll update once we have a handle on things.

  24. Here’s a bit of helpful information for setting up on Apple’s Mail app, that the Q&A linked to above doesn’t mention:

When prompted to enter your email address and password, there is a "Continue" button that automatically will set up the account with known POP settings.

Don’t click it right away. Instead:

Hold the "Option" key while clicking the "Continue" button, and the Mail app (in OS 10.6 or newer) will then bring you to the settings page where you manually input the listed IMAP settings.

    • Useful info! But i still have an issue "logging into outlook.com IMAP server (imap-mail.outlook.com) failed". There is nothing wrong with my password or username so I am very confused. Has anyone got any ideas or maybe the same issue? Thxs

      • Hi Patrick,

We’ve seen some users hit this issue intermittently. Can you try again now to see if you’re able to login? If not, can you tell me the IMAP client you’re using as well as the URL, port, and SSL settings you’ve input into the client?

        Thanks,
        Ben
        Outlook.com Program Manager

        • Hi there, thxs for your reply. I’ve tried again but no luck. I use Mac Mail. All the setting seem to be automatically filled in. But from what I can see its SSL port 993 with password identification. The IMAP Path Prefix field is empty. The ‘use IDLE command if the server supports it’ box is ticked.
In the advanced section for smtp the box ‘use default ports 25,465,587′ is ticked. Same goes foor the ‘use SSL’ box and Authentication is set to ‘Password’.
Outgoing Mail Server is set to ‘Use only this server’ and TLS Certificate is marked as ‘None’.
Thats pretty much it. Hope this helps.
If I could send you print screens I would but cant seem to attach any here.
          Thxs

  25. Hi, First thanks for adding IMAP support. I setup my outlook.com account in Thunderbird 17.0.8 using the IMAP settings. I am able to synchronize changes from outlook.com down to Thunderbird but I am not able to synchronize changes made in Thunderbird back up to outlook.com. I have been using another IMAP account with Thunderbird very successfully so I am not sure where the problem lies. Thanks, Rod

    • Hi Rodney,

If the changes you’re making in Thunderbird are moves or deletes, then it’s possibly due to Thunderbird’s default option to not sync deletions back up to the server (via the IMAP EXPUNGE command). In Thunderbird, go to your outlook.com IMAP account settings, then "Server Settings", and check the "Clean up (‘Expunge’) Inbox on Exit" option. When you exit Thunderbird, your deletes will be synced up to the server! In IMAP, moves are actually a COPY then a DELETE, so even mail moves could be affected by this.

If you’re still seeing issues, comment back and I’ll see what I can do to help!

  26. I am also getting an Error 9. This is with Thunderbird on Ubuntu.

  27. There is one big usability problem with Outlook.com and that is with POP3 accounts that are connected with Outlook.com, they get synchronized each 30 minutes!!

When I’m on the telephone and someone tells me look at your mail I just send it you have to wait 30 minutes before Outlook.com gets your new mail!! The "check for new mail" button on the Windows Phone and on the Desktop Outlook doesn’t activate Outlook.com to do a new sync immediately, and that has to change to make it usable!!!!!

    • Hi Johannespreekt,

Thanks for the feedback. If your provider allows it, we recommend forwarding your mail to Outlook.com for the best experience. We realize not everyone is able to do that though, so it’s a good suggestion.

      • Thanks for your response Steve, I will look into the "forwarding" possibilities. The reason I use POP3 because I have my own domain.

About the problem, I would think Outlook.com gets a sync request from connected software (windows Phone, Office outlook, Windows 8 mail) and instead only pushing the inbox from the account I think it wouldn’t be that difficult to sync the connected POP3 accounts. 28. Trying to integrate Outlook.com with IMAP & OAuth and getting error as "The scope ‘wl.imap’ does not exist."

If I remove wl.imap scope, everything works but I need the imap integration.
    Response from api

error=invalid_scope&error_description=The provided value for the input parameter ‘scope’ is not valid. The scope ‘wl.imap’ does not exist."

Is IMAP over OAuth live yet?

    • Hi Arun,

You’re using the correct scope, wl.imap. That scope is live and supported. Usually when the "does not exist" error shows up, it is due to other parameters in your call being incorrect. Can you paste in the full request URL that you’re trying?

      Thanks,
      Ben

      • Hi Ben,

Thanks for looking at the issue. I was using windows live integration that doesn’t support this scope. I now switched to Oauth2.0 and it recognizes the scope. However, I’m not hitting Error 9 with imap. Server error. Please try again later.

        Thanks,
        Arun

        • Hi Arun,

We’ve seen a handful of reports of users running into the error 9 so we’re looking into this with high priority. That aside, I’m glad that OAuth is working for you now!

          Thanks for reporting,

  29. As a mail app developer (AquaMail for Android), I’m very excited about this.

Where can I report bugs? I have a case where the server fails to return the content of a simple message, using UID FETCH BODY.PEEK[1].

    • Hi Konstantin,

Thanks for reporting that – we’ll work on fixing that up. As a workaround temporarily, instead of requesting BODY.PEEK[1], try requesting BODY[TEXT].

      • Ben,

Thank you for responding. For your reference:

My account is kmansoft / at sign / hotmail / dot com. The failing messages are: INBOX – UID 100006, 100004, 100001; Sent – UID 100012 to 100002 inclusive.

I do have a fallback in place (similar to what you suggested), thanks.

        • Hi Konstantin,

We actually have a good understanding of the bug at this time, but thanks for offering your account as a repro. If we need it, we’ll take a look!

  31. Mac Mail works well with outlook.com imap, apart from one problem, it wont sync deleted emails in the "Deleted" folder and so it creates a Deleted Messages folder instead, how can I resolve this? Thanks.

    • Fairly certain this is a setting within the Mail app. Something like "Delete messages on server" I believe. When checked it deletes the email from the IMAP account, when unchecked it just deletes it locally and syncs that local deleted messages folder to the account.

    • Hi Lorne,

Mac Mail should have an option where you can tell it to use a given folder as the deleted items folder (and sent items and junk folders). Depending on your version of Mac Mail, you can do this by selecting the actual "deleted items" folder, then selecting the Mailbox menu and then "Use this Mailbox for" > "Deleted Items".

  32. Hi there, desperate for some help here. Have been trying for hours now to set up my Outlook account with Mac Mail using the IMAP Outlook setting shown above. Every time I try to the account online I get a password prompt with the message "Mail cant connect to the account Outlook". Can anyone help me out here? I’m certain my password is correct, tried enough times to guarantee this). The setting are all correct as far as I can see (same ones from the blog post). If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful. Thxs

  33. I added my hotmail account into the mail app for mac. It seems everything works fine but when I delete an email or when I move an email to one of my folders at the mac.app the email remains in the inbox on my iphone / outlook web access.

    Thx,
    Frank

    • That´s true, I have the same problem. I no long use it with my mac mail. I hope with time it get´s better, so I can sync my contacts, calendar and email seamlessly. I did use MacMail to transfer all my folders from Gmail to Outlook, that is all I was waiting for to make the switch.

    • Hi Frank,

I believe both Thunderbird and Apple Mail have, by default, options that do not sync deletions back up to the server (via the IMAP EXPUNGE command). For example, in Thunderbird, go to your outlook.com IMAP account settings, then "Server Settings", and check the "Clean up (‘Expunge’) Inbox on Exit" option. When you exit Thunderbird, your deletes will be synced up to the server! There is a similar option in Mac Mail.

      Hope this helps,
      Ben

      • Hi Ben,

the symthom or issue does not only take place when I delete an email same behaviour is happening when I move an email into a folder. This email remains in the inbox on the server and is now also available in the selected folder.

In general the inbox update should not only take place when I would exit the mail app it should happen simultaneously.

        Frank

  35. Hello,

First, Thank you for adding iMap. I really like outlook.com and I always wanted to use it so that it works well with my iPhone and mail.app on my Mac and now I can. I am having some minor problems setting it up well. The server, mail sending and all those issues work but the part that is a bit annoying is:

    a) If I store my sent items on the server (check box in settings), I get duplicate messages in the sent items. If I uncheck it, it works well but then I can’t do the nice trick of "Use This Mailbox for" and I have to deal with my outlook.com not being in my Sent folder but being in their own folder and not the special sent folders. Also, since I don’t store them on the server, I have duplicates but in two different folders. I hope you see what I mean.

    b) It does not Auto-expunge as I see on this blog. If I delete something from my inbox, it needs to be deleted from either the trash Or exiting MAC mail for it to really delete from the inbox on the web. This is important. Let’s say I delete a message from my inbox on Mac Mail and then don’t close my Mac Mail. I still find it on my iPhone. To work around this, I have set the "Delete my trash" once per day to have a 24 hour cadence. It would be nice to fix this. I see a lot of blogs asking Thunderbird for auto-expunge but Mac Mail does not have that. Or I can’t find it.

    Thank you

    Mario

  36. Mac Mail created my hotmail.com account downloading my personal folders with all included mails, but I do not see my mails in the "Inbox folder"

  37. Has anyone had any success using sparrow for mac?

  38. good thing, but please can you fix Outlook 2013, so that we can send there with the aliases and connected Accounts from outlook.com! It works like charm when i use the paid Servcice MS Exchange Online. there Outlook 2013 autodetects all aliases and connected accounts and the i can send with these in outlook 2013. And i want that to work with outlook.com. With the windows 8 mail app it works, too. There you can select all aliases and connected accounts. would be soooo sooo sooo nice if this will be fixed

outlook.com is such a great mail service.. so when this feature did work, it would be perfect!

and it would be nice if someone of MS could talk about this problem. THANKS! :)

    • Hey Matthias,

Thanks for the feedback. The team is definitely aware of the request to make aliases work on the Outlook client.

  42. Hi there,

Where should one go to report issues with the IMAP implementation, or simply get dev support? I’ve run into a critical issue with UID FETCH responses that prevents me from adding outlook as a provider for the application I’m developing.

Apart from that issue, it works really well, congrats to the team behind that!

    Thanks,

    • Hi Alexandre,

I’d be happy to investigate. What issue have you run into with UID FETCH in particular?

      Ben

      • Hi Ben,

I have an issue when trying to fetch a BODY part of an email that contains only one part on its BODYSTRUCTURE. When requesting that part with

UID FETCH 10051 (ENVELOPE BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (CONTENT-TYPE FROM SUBJECT TO)] BODY.PEEK[1])

the BODY1 key returned in the response has a null value.

I’m pretty sure the issue happens 100% when trying to fetch a plain-text mail.. Please let me know if you’re able to reproduce the issue, or if you believe something’s wrong with my requests.

        Thanks,
        Alexandre

        • Actually, it happens with mails with a Content-Type that is not multipart, so it’s not only plain text mails but also html ones (mails with content type text/plain or text/html)

      • Hi Ben,

Another question: Do you have a special folder indexing all emails, from the inbox and other folders? For instance Gmail has [Gmail]/All Mail, which is pretty useful!

        Thanks,
        Alexandre

  44. Hi all, i have a question about the new IMAP protocol in Outlook.com.
I’m using my Outlook.com account as IMAP protocol on Mac, my client is Outlook 2011 for Mac.
The problem i have is that using my client email messages are received in my inbox with a few minutes delay.
Gmail hit the inbox instantaneously, Outlook.com email messages take minutes.
    Any idea?
    Thanx

    • Hi Giuseppe71,

This 2-minute delay is due to the fact that we don’t support the IMAP IDLE extension. We’re definitely considering this for the future!

      Ben
      Outlook.com Program Manager

      • Any specific reason there is no support for this currently? Having IMAP IDLE is pretty crucial these days as constantly polling for new messages is very inefficient (for both us and you) and may not even be possible for some depending on the client they are using.

Thank you very much for considering this. How long do you foresee something like this taking to implement?

  45. Hello,

First – thanks for adding IMAP. It makes outlook.com perfect for me.

I’m having one recurring issue on the two accounts I’ve setup to use IMAP. I’m using Mac Mail on 10.8.5. Frequently I get an error "The message "[message subject …]" could not be moved to the mailbox "[mailbox name]". The attempt to read data from the server "imap-mail.outlook.com" failed. It always works the second time.

This appears to be an error – otherwise things are working great.

    • Hi Steve,

I’ll check this out for sure. Thanks for the notification. I’m also glad that the second attempt works and that you’re not blocked.

      Ben
      Outlook.com Program Manager

      • I’m having the same issue as Steve above. Please see my reply to him. Thanks.

    • Yea, I can confirm that this is a problem for me as well. It almost seems as the connection for deleted items folder breaks after you don’t use it for a certain amount of time and it takes you trying to delete something to reopen the connection again for it to work. That’s why trying to delete it a second time always work as well as trying to delete anything else immediately afterwards.

  46. For those having issues with deleted messages and moved messages not being synced back to the server on Mac, give Airmail a try. I just got it set up and it seems to be working perfectly.

  47. IMAP on mac mail does not seem to work with hotmail address.
On many forum it works for people that have outlook.com address, but hotmail address we only get our folders but nothing in the inbox. Please fix that problem.

    • Hi Jonathan,

@hotmail.com addresses should work the same as @outlook.com addresses, so it’s not due to the address you’re using. Check out the "Mac Mail" link in the "How to connect" section of the blog post above to make sure you’ve set up Mac Mail correctly!

      Ben

      • Thanks, I have check and looking at comments above I am not the only one with the same problem.
"The connection to the server “imap-mail.outlook.com” on port 993 timed out"

      • Hi Ben,

I’m having the same problem… I have configured Mac Mail correctly. My Hotmail account folders are sync, but the main inbox is empty.

I have post directly to you and I still do not get any help and I’m getting frustrated.

        Can you please help,

        Aldo

  48. First of all, thanks for your efforts in implementing IMAP on the Microsoft servers. This was a sorely missing feature.

Unfortunately, there are still bugs to be worked out. Mail on the Mac creates in own ‘Sent Messages’ and ‘Deleted Messages’ mailboxes on the server and that causes some sync problems. The Server appears to try to sync between its own ‘Sent’ and ‘Deleted’ mailboxes and the Mac Mail created ‘Sent Messages’ and ‘Deleted Messages’ mailboxes but that just starts to result in duplication of messages that don’t delete properly/completely.

If you delete the Mac Mail created ‘Sent Messages’ and ‘Deleted Messages’ mailboxes from the server you start to get error messages when you try deleting messages from the Mac and strange double mailboxes (combined Sent and Deleted mailboxes) start to appear in both the Sent and Trash mailboxes on the Mac.

    • Hi Gino,

Mac Mail should have an option where you can tell it to use a given folder as the deleted items folder (and sent items and junk folders). Depending on your version of Mac Mail, you can do this by selecting the actual "deleted items" folder, then selecting the Mailbox menu and then "Use this Mailbox for" > "Deleted Items".

      Ben
      Outlook.com Program Manager

  49. I also have the problem when I delete an email or when I move an email to one of my folders at the mac.app the email remains in the inbox on my iPhone and Outlook Web Access. I also get an error that says that the server do not support to move the message to the trash. Any changes that this will be fixed?

    • Hi Blaster Master,

I believe both Thunderbird and Mac Mail have, by default, options that do not sync deletions back up to the server (via the IMAP EXPUNGE command).

      Hope this helps,
      Ben

      • It dosent work. I get a (TRYCREATE) error every time I click on the trash and sent folder. And the deleted messages remains in the inbox on Outlook Web Access and other devices. I don’t think the problemer is on my side. I think the IMAP in Outlook.com is faulty.

  50. Thanks for implementing IMAP. Really improves things. One issue that I have noticed on iOS. emails that I could previously read under the POP3 setting now read "This message cannot be displayed because of the way it is formatted…" I can read it in Mail, on outlook.com and used to be able to read it in iOS please please fix.

  51. Congratulations and thank you for the Outlook.com IMAP implementation.

Looking at the capabilities there’s no much of them yet, but I guess more will be added with time.

How about reflecting Outlook.com categories into IMAP keywords ? I’ve made a test, added a category to a message, then looking on IMAP side, the category doesn’t appear as an IMAP message keyword.

Also, it’s not possible to tag a message :

    A SELECT command returns :

    * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (Answered Flagged Deleted Seen Draft)] Limited

And tagging a message is not possible :
    a STORE 1 +FLAGS (MyTag)
a BAD Invalid "flag-list": Contains unsupported flag or closing character missing.

Are IMAP keywords and Outlook.com categories reflected as IMAP keywords on the Outlook.com team ToDo list ? That would be make a better user experience.

    Cheers.

  54. although seems to be working ok using Mac Mail, keep getting this… "The connection to the server “imap-mail.outlook.com” on port 993 timed out" thoughts please?

  55. I have the same problem as several other people here. I’m able to setup my @outlook.com email address with Mail on my Mac running Mountain Lion. However, when I delete a message in the Mail app the change is not reflected in my inbox on outlook.com. I’ve tried checking and unchecking the option to ‘Store deleted messages on the server’ (under Accounts>Mailbox Behaviors in Mail.app) but it doesn’t seem to do anything. I then figured out that manually deleting the trash mailbox deletes deleted messages from the server but, strangely, telling Mail to delete trash automatically on shutdown doesn’t seem to do the trick. I do not want to do the ‘Use mailbox as trick’ as I have multiple accounts in Mail and do not want trash from one account to be merged with that of another. Any ideas on how to get Mail and the web version to "just work" together?

  56. Also now notice using Mac Mail that for every email i send it creates a duplicate in my sent folder, can you help? Thanks.

    • You’ll need to disable the setting on Mac Mail that creates a copy of sent items (that’s their default setting, but our service already automatically saves every mail you send in the sent folder).

  57. Is there any reason Archive folder is not accessible through IMAP? I think this should be possible

    • No, all folders should be accessible. You may need to check on your client and make sure that it has subscribed to that folder. Steps for doing that vary by client.

  58. Any specific reason there is no support for IMAP IDLE currently? Having IMAP IDLE is pretty crucial these days as constantly polling for new messages is very inefficient (for both us and you) and may not even be possible for some depending on the client they are using.

Thank you very much for considering this. How long do you foresee something like this taking to implement?

  59. Thunderbird auto-saves my message every 5 minutes while I am composing. A new draft is created each time. This is because Thunderbird is unable to find the message-id of the existing draft.

The underlying reason is a bug in Exchange 2010. Mail header search does not work. That is:
. SEARCH Subject Test will find all messages with Subject == ‘Test’, but
. SEARCH HEADER Subject Test will not find anything.

. SEARCH HEADER Message-ID always fails, so a new draft is created each time.

Of course, Thunderbird works correctly with my other IMAP accounts. The existing draft is deleted and the new draft is saved so that only one copy exists.

  60. @Steve Kafka

    Quote:
"You’ll need to disable the setting on Mac Mail that creates a copy of sent items (that’s their default setting, but our service already automatically saves every mail you send in the sent folder)."

    Hi Steve,

Although that solves the problem of strange behaviour between Mac Mail and the Microsoft servers, it creates duplication of messages when you try to delete Sent messages. After deleting Sent Messages in Mac Mail you have to also go to the Server‘s Sent mailbox (duplicated in Mac Mail sidebar) and delete them again. This is “unfriendly” behaviour. It would be better if there was better synchronization between the Sent mailbox in Mac Mail and the one on the server.

Also, although not as critical, if setting in Mac Mail ‘Store deleted messages on the server‘ is set to on, strange behaviour is also exhibited. Turning this setting to off solves strange behaviour but we lose the synchronization benefits of IMAP.

  62. Has anyone seen this message "imap server wants to alert you to the following:fatal error:no such file or directory"? Operating Outlook 2013 through Office 365 and my devices are not syncing up with my server (register.com). Any suggestions?

  63. Three things:

    1. I can’t get search by MessageId to work. Is this a known issue
    2. No appenduid support?
    3. No imap idle support?

    • Hi IQTELL RND,

We don’t currently support UIDPLUS commands nor IDLE. We’re definitely considering support for those in the future.

As for the SEARCH command, can you send the request you’re sending and the response you receive?

      Ben
      Outlook.com Program Manager

      • Our app, mailstrom.co, connects to the Outlook IMAP server on behalf of many accounts. For some users, UID SEARCH is returning UIDs in non-ascending order; we are not able to process mail for these users. The condition seems to only affect certain accounts, and the same request always returns the same mis-ordered list of UIDs for that account.

See section 2.3.1.1 of RFC 3501 – "Unique identifiers MUST be strictly ascending in the mailbox at all times." http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3501

I’m posting this here because there seems to be no other developer forum to discuss the outlook.com IMAP implementation.

      • The search info you requested: (IMAP session commands/response)

        A5 SEARCH HEADER Message-ID ALL
        * SEARCH
        A5 OK SEARCH Completed

      • The html comment box messed up on the less than and greater than symbols. So i reposted without it.

        A5 SEARCH HEADER Message-ID 1824972132.2.1379874107984.JavaMail.Harry@Harry-Office ALL
        * SEARCH
        A5 OK SEARCH Completed

  64. I can confirm that SEARCH by MESSAGE-ID fails. The exact command I’m using is:

    UID SEARCH HEADER Message-ID "".

This works with other mail servers where my code has to compensate for the lack of UIDPLUS by using a SEARCH.

Supporting UIDPLUS would be great. I can’t think of a large mail provider that doesn’t support it (that goes for IDLE too).

    • Hi Konstantin,

SEARCH using MESSAGE-ID is unsupported at this time. But we’re keeping UIDPLUS (and IDLE) on our radar for the future. Thanks for the suggestion!

  65. IMAP server won’t authenticate my password/login, however it has d/l a number of headers in a number of folders. I can also apparently send mail OK. I can’t see any mail in my inbox, however.

    • I have the same issue, al the e-mails in the folders under inbox are downloading as well as all sent, deleted, junk etc items. But none of the inbox e-mails are downloading.

  66. Not sure why my comment could not withstand moderation, but I recorded the Thunderbird log file, and the SEARCH command that fails is

    SEARCH UNDELETED HEADER Message-ID AABBCCDD.nnnnnnn@outlook.com

where AABBCCDD.nnnnnnn@outlook.com is one of four Message-IDs corresponding to the 4 copies of my message created in the Drafts folder when Thunderbird auto-saved my message at one-minute intervals. If the search succeeded then Thunderbird would delete the old draft and save the current one so that there would be only one copy. The search fails, so a duplicate is created whenever Thunderbird auto-saves.

This is not a bug in Thunderbird; it is a bug in Outlook.com’s IMAP support.

  67. Reply/Forward State Sync both ways – Many users are lamenting that with ActiveSync Outlook 2013/iPhone Mail App is unable to synchronize the reply state? That means when users use outlook.com they don’t not know if they replied or forwarded an email. Does this work with IMAP? Is this going to work with EAS in future?

  68. Hi Ben,

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for the suggestion but that creates two of every sent message (i.e.. duplicates.) One is the actual message generated by Mail on the Mac that now gets stored on the server and another one automatically generated by the server and also stored there which we are lead to believe (according to Steve Kafka’s) is the normal behaviour of the Microsoft Mail server.

That’s is the crux of the problem here. The server should not be generating anything! It should be reacting to the client storing, moving and deleting messages as it is commanded by the client.

IMAP will never work properly in conjunction with the behaviour of the server unless you can suppress that behaviour.

    • Hi Gino,

Our SMTP service creates a sent mail automatically because it is also used by POP clients. I understand that this is causing duplicates in Mac Mail. I believe Mac Mail has an option to not store sent messages on the server, which may help you.

Despite that, we’re also hearing your feedback that you’d like an option to be able to turn off SMTP’s automatic saving of sent mail to prevent these duplicates. It’s on my list of things to explore for future work!

  70. Hello, anyone who has a problem connection Outlook 2010 to Office 365 Hosted Exchange, apply Office 2010 SP2 update to your Microsoft Office 2010. I have seen this happen with a lot of clients, and without the SP2 the Exchange autodiscovery doesn’t always work correctly

  71. The EXPUNGE command is quite slow. I’m seeing delays of 10s – 15s before the command completes, and no other commands are serviced in the meantime. A little bit of testing shows that even other connections are affected by it (they’re stalled too), even if they have a different folder selected. Is your team aware of this, and are they working on it?

I’ll chime in one more vote for UIDPLUS and IDLE support.

    • Hi yorbajim,

Thanks for the heads up on the EXPUNGE performance. Our monitoring is showing quicker response times in aggregate, but it’s definitely possible you’re seeing that delay. I’ll investigate to make sure there’s nothing wrong.

And I hear ya on the desire for UIDPLUS and IDLE =] Thanks for reinforcing that!

  72. I have the Archive folder with almost 10000 emails and IMAP always fails to sync it :( However, in my phone with EAS no problem

  73. Awesome! Tons of Mailbird (getmailbird dot com) users waiting for full IMAP support which a large % being Outlook.com users. Great that more people will have the option to use Outlook.com with their Mailbird email app!

  74. I appreciate the addition of IMAP. However, I’m quite surprised that the largest software vendor in the world rolled out a service/protocol that was not tested. Specifically, I’m referring to the interaction with your own products (Outlook 2007 and EAS)

IMAP is just riddled with issues from being extremely slow or not being able to sync or move files to the archive folder from within Outlook to IMAP and EAS not being in sync.

How long are we going to have to wait for a production ready implementation. I switched over from Gmail and for the time-being, I’m regretting that migration due to the lack of reliability.

  75. You guys really need to fix the sent and delete folder sync problem. I don’t understand how any competent company can have such a BAD implementation of a decades old IMAP technology. It’s as if you guys hired a bunch of clowns from high school to do it. Just what is going on at Redmond? Why does it take you years to implement something that should take weeks? I’m glad that Ballmer is getting fired after years of incompetence. Someone else should be fired for such a bad implementation of IMAP. Stop with your lousy excuses and get it DONE!

  76. So why is this not working now with my Blackberry Z10? It was working for weeks and now not for the past few days?

  77. Hi,
This is great that Outlook.com now has IMAP.You mentioned that Outlook.com IMAP supports the IMAP commands. But when I use the IMAP settings and the command to download mails, the LOGIN command failed with the error "$ BAD Too many arguments provided.". Where the LOGIN command is as
    ——"$ LOGIN TestUser@hotmail.com Password@123 rn "———.
And the IMAP settings I used are

    Server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    Server port: 993
    Encryption: SSL
    What will be the issue?
And if you can suggest any forum link that I can post my queries related to Outlook.com imap then it will really be appreciate.

  78. Please, these config do not work,
I am trying config imap using android mobile apps, but an error is occuring "connection to server failed…" I tried others apps and the error is the same.

    Server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    Server port: 993
    Encryption: SSL

    Is this the correct configuration?

  79. Hi! I’m checking your IMAP support and there’s a problem with folders with more than 10k messages. When I execute the commands SELECT or EXAMINE he server returns "A6 NO Error 9. Server error. Please try again later.".
Any idea when this problem can be solved?
    Thanks!

  80. you have to add an option to disable the saving of sent message if i use imap. because so, if I configure my email client to save sent items in sent folder i have duplicated items. if i don’t save sent items on server i have the same items in two folder, one on server and one on local

  82. Guys, please fix the duplicate sent item thing. Everytime i send an email with my client i find duplicated emails in my sent folder. I would also like to be able to "send and archive" an email so when i reply is out of my inbox. If you fix those points i will give outlook.com 5 stars :)

  83. please make it possible in Outlook 2013 to send from all aliases and connected Accounts, like on an Exchange Server (for example. Exchange online). There Outlook 2013 fetches alls adresses automatically in the from dropdown field when composing a new mail. so please fix this for outlook.com!! and fix it soon, we’ll wait since months :((

  84. Hi Ben Poon,

I have a problem with IMAP, sometimes I’m getting error "A6 NO Error 9. Server error. Please try again later.", other times I’m getting "Connection timed our error".
Is there a fix in the works?
Having moved from gmail I really like outlook.com, but unreliable IMAP is a deal breaker for many people.

    Thanks
    Amir

    • Hi Amir,

Thanks for reporting. Error 9s are a known issue that was being caused by several scenarios. We’ve fixed a handful of those, but are still working on several more with high priority. Thanks for your patience.

  85. I have another IMAP bug to report.

FETCH BODYSTRUCTURE corrupts non-English characters in filenames.

Original filename: "Ошибка-Samsung-Eclipse.png" (those are Russian characters)

Encoded on the sending side as: "=?UTF-8?B?0J7RiNC40LHQutCwLVNhbXN1bmctRWNsaXBzZS5wbmc=?=".

Returned by FETCH BODYSTRUCTURE as a bunch of question marks. The corruption is irreversible.

BODYSTRUCTURE (("TEXT" "html" ("charset" "koi8-r") NIL NIL "QUOTED-PRINTABLE" 86 2 NIL NIL NIL NIL)("image" "png" ("name" "??????-Samsung-Eclipse.png") NIL NIL "BASE64" 141746 NIL NIL NIL NIL) "mixed" ("boundary" "—-==–bound.35339.web7h.yandex.ru") NIL NIL NIL)

The revelant part is: ("image" "png" ("name" "??????-Samsung-Eclipse.png")

  86. I’m having trouble getting all my devices to sync. I have an @hotmail.com account, and I was very delighted to hear that I could use IMAP now, until I tried making it work.. When I delete a message on Mac Mail or Outlook for Mac (2011), my Mac doesn’t sync with my iPhone or iPad (and vice versa), which leads to the fact that I have to delete every mail on each device separately. Do you guys have any idea how I can fix this? In both e-mail programs?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Lara,

Mac Mail and Mac Outlook 2011 have, by default, options that do not sync deletions back up to the server (via the IMAP EXPUNGE command). Look in your app’s options/settings for something like "Clean up (‘Expunge’) Inbox on Exit" or "Delete mails on exit" and select it.

      Hope this helps,
