Got feedback? Send a smile or a frown

In this post, Tucker Hatfield, a Program Manager on the Visio team, shows you how to give us feedback by sending a smile or frown. This same feature is available in all Office Preview products.

Now that the Visio Preview is available, we want to hear what you have to say.  You can let us know how you use Visio, what’s most useful to you, what you like, and what changes you’d like to see. A big part of what will make the Visio Preview successful is the feedback we’ll get from you, so help us make Visio better by sharing your thoughts through the Send-a-Smile feature.

With Send-a-Smile, you can tell the Visio team directly about your experiences. Sending smiles or frowns is super easy. We want to hear all of your feedback — problems and suggestions, but don’t forget to tell us when you’re especially pleased with something — we appreciate knowing what you think we did right, too!

How to send feedback

You can send us feedback without even leaving Visio. In the upper-right corner of the Visio application, right next to your user information, you’ll see a smiley icon. When you click it, you’ll get two choices: Send a Smile and Send a Frown (there are even keyboard commands to make it really easy). Click any time you have anything you want to communicate to us.

Send a smile and send a frown

Once you’ve chosen to send a smile or frown, you’ll be given a form to fill out. As you can see below, the form is very brief. All you need to do is type in some text for us to read. It doesn’t have to be long, but try to be really specific; the more clearly you describe what you like or dislike, the more likely we are to get your message. It makes us happy to see someone comment “Great!!” but we really want to know what got the writer so excited.

Note that there’s a checkbox to say whether you want to include a screenshot or not. Screenshots can be very helpful to us in understanding your comments, so include them whenever possible. The screenshots look very small in the form, but there’s actually a lot of detail in those you send,  which give us a good look at what you were doing. Keep in mind that the screenshot includes everything you see on all of your monitors.

You can also choose to include an email address for us to use if we have any questions.

Once you’re done, all you need to do is click the Send-a-Smile button and your comment will be on its way to us. Of course, you’ll need to be able to connect to the Internet for it to be sent. There’s also a close button to the form. You can use that to exit Send-a-Smile without sending anything to us.

What happens then?

Your Visio Send-a-Smile comments come directly to our team. We regularly read and discuss them. They’re delivered through a tool that helps us filter them by a wide variety of things such as dates and keywords. It even shows us a visualization that illustrates the most common words and phrases. We use those tools to look for trends and recurring types of feedback. We also look for interesting individual comments and share them as well. What we learn from discussing the feedback fuels our decisions and shapes the work we do, both for the current and future versions of Visio.

In closing…

Be sure to use Send-a-Smile whenever you have comments about your experience. It’s important to us, and it lets you share in making Visio better.
